1997 Daewoo Cielo GL from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Expensive in the long run

Faults:

The clutch needed to be replaced at 16000 km.

Seats have worn down very badly even though I am a very light female. And also the only person who drives the car.

The front lights were inclined to such an angle that at night, driving was not possible. this needed to be fixed straight away.

A cable which attaches the transmission to the gear stick keeps on disconnecting. This results in no transmission control what so ever. I am quite lucky that this has never happened to me whilst the car is running. however on more than one occasion, I have started the car up to find that the cables have disconnected from each other and it cannot be driven at all.

At 54000 km there is major sludge formation at the top end of the engine. This will need a new engine to be put in.

General Comments:

This is a great first car, however can have a mind of its own. I have two daewoo's of the same make and model. one is going very well without any major issues at 120,000 km. however, the second one requires a new engine at 54,000 km.

My advice is that one should be very cautious when buying this car. it has known faults with the engine and the construction is very sloppy - resulting in cables flying loose quite often.

1997 Daewoo Cielo GLE 1.5 MPI from Argentina

Summary:

A luxury car for those who can't pay for a luxury car

Faults:

Brakes are not as reliable as I'd like on a 160 km/h car. Although I changed pads and got them serviced it's still a weak break. Perhaps rear drums are too small.

The driver's seat elevation system does not work since I bought it (65K Km).

The seats foam became weak and uncomfortable.

All suspension system had to be replaced at 70.000 km.

The official service in Argentina is quite expensive as well as spare parts.

However in some cases (distribution belt, brake pads, sparks, sparks cables) spares from Chevrolet (GM) will work fine.

General Comments:

In my country buying this car, is about as expensive as buying a mono-body car without such comfort.

So you can buy a cielo, and get AC, power steering, electric windows, hydraulic clutch etc, for the same money you buy a basic car national made.

This car can give a lot of comfort and it's quite reliable.

It's not a sporty car at all, you can't ask it to run as the wind... it can barely run as a breeze... but it will always run.

1997 Daewoo Cielo GLE 1.5 MPFI from Romania

Summary:

A very reliable car

Faults:

Front window has broken easy at 85.000 km. I have changed one pivot because of the bad roads. The braking system and the rear suspension system give a lot of trouble at 90.000 km.

General Comments:

This car is very comfortable for Romanian roads, and gives me a very pleasant drive. It cannot be the sportiest car on the road, but I can travel comfortably at 120-130 km/h when I get to open it up out on a country road. It is good on the petrol as well (11 liter/100 km in city and 7 l outside).

1997 Daewoo Cielo iL 1.5 petrol from South Africa

Summary:

Excellent value for money

Faults:

The water pump was replaced at 180 000 kilometer's.

The ball joints were replaced after an encounter with a pavement.

Tappet cover gasket was replaced, but it still leaks oil.

Damper's replaced.

Driver's seat re-upholstered.

General Comments:

This car is ultra reliable, but very slow.

I have replaced the standard air filter with a performance cone filter.

I have also ditched the standard exhaust for a stainless steel free-flow exhaust.

This has helped, but I intend gas flowing the head next.

I have the 1.5 litre GLX 16v DOHC model.

Just one question.

Does the stainless steel free flow exhaust system and performance cone filter make it heavier or lighter on fuel consumption?

I have notice that I get more mileage per liter on 93 LRP fuel than on unleaded fuel.

Is there any way to make the headlights shine brighter during night time driving or not?

What can I do to make the overall performance of the car better?
