1999 Dodge Intrepid Base 2.7 from North America

Summary:

A Good car with an Engine defect

Faults:

Air Conditioning quit- will not take Freon.

Pass Window is faulty, but still works Door lock faulty- makes noise on locking.

Replaced Transmission sensors (2) at 42,000 miles- did oil and filter also.

I now have Great Fear - the engine is 2.7 and the Oil light is flickering, yesterday I checked the Oil. It was OK, today I checked again- it was down near a quart- No smoke- so where did the oil go.

On learning of the 2.7 Problems I switched to Synthetic oil- but it looks like the bearings are going to go out as the oil pressure light is related to resistance of the oil as it passes the bearings- That's my guess. I am headed for Disaster.

General Comments:

Chrysler owes a Recall on the 2.7 Engine or they should repair them regardless of miles up to 100,000.

There are too many Engine failures to be anything, but bad design or workmanship.

I have a 1999 intrepid myself, and same thing happening with the oil light. Personally I think that the problem lies somewhere else as the pressure is OK, but not the rpm that sometimes goes to low (500) and that's the moment when I see the light flicker. Usually the idling rpm should be close to 700. Other than that, my car has now 115 Miles and the engine is burning some oil, but not significant in quantity, and is running very nice, no sounds of any kind.

Summary:

Very bad!

Faults:

My engine died suddenly at 104000 miles.

General Comments:

The engine on my 1999 Dodge intrepid failed suddenly as I was driving down the road this past March (2005). I brought it to the local mechanic and he said I'd need a new motor. The only problem is a new motor cost over $4000. Even a used one cost $2500. Since doing more research on this motor I've found many reviews identicle to this. These engines tend to fail without warning. I would not recommend anyone to buy this model car. I've lost total faith in the manufacturer.

Dodge Intrepids are very good cars, if you get a 3.2L, 3.3L, or a 3.5L V6. The 2.7L is a dissaster waiting to happen. I have a 96 with a 3.3L, and it has 207,177 miles and runs like new. I would highly recomend the Dodge Intrepid, but I WOULD HIGHLY DISCOURAGE GETTING ONE WITH A 2.7L. One of the probloms is sludge, and the timing chains break from sludge. The 3.2L, 3.3L, and 3.5L will last forever.

Summary:

It is a piece of junk

Faults:

I bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with the infamous 2.7L engine about 5 years ago.

It had 18,000 Kilometres on it at the time.

At 118,000 kilometres the motor blew. The engine started making a ticking noise and then it was gone, Timing chain broke. I spent $5, 5000 to buy rebuilt and to have it put it. Now on the second engine I putted 150,000 kilometres. Total 270,000. Since the all power locks stopped working, one by one they all quit, Window brackets (bottom of the power windows) broke off, fuel pump $800, radiator fan, a/c compressor $500, a/c evaporator $1000

I will not buy any dodge anymore.

Exact same things on mine. all 4 power locks failed at 2 years after purchase. And the engine and/or oil pump just blew tonight at almost exactly 125,000miles.

Very typical American car. Will never buy another.

Summary:

This car is comfortable, quiet and dependable

Faults:

This car was my husbands company car, then we bought it when he got a new car. The transmission went out at about 45000 miles. I truly believe it is because of the way my husband shifts it though.

General Comments:

I love driving this car. It is so comfortable and easy to handle. It is very roomy with a huge trunk. The only thing I dislike about it are the blind spots in the 4-corners of the car. I would recommend this car for anyone who drives a lot.
