1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 V6 from North America

Summary:

If it was to hold up better I'd buy another in a heartbeat without the fear of the problems

Faults:

First the transmission sensor went out suddenly. Then one by one the fans went out. Next the Airconditioning condensor went out then to top it all out The transmission went completely out without any warning what so ever. Intrepids have a smoking problem due to poor design of the muffler system and It did begin to leak oil from the main seal at 75,000 miles.

General Comments:

With all that went wrong I did truly love this car it drove like a dream and was very easly on gas. It handled very well. It was a roomy car as well.

1999 Dodge Intrepid ES 2.7 from North America

Summary:

Beautiful car, but a LOT of issues need to be addressed by Chrysler

Faults:

Power window motor went out the first week I had it.

The air conditioning went out the first week also.

The dash cracked completely through by the drivers side window and I have no idea how it could do that.

Rear air vents stopped working after the first year I had the car.

General Comments:

The car hit 36,000 miles when I was driving it home the day I bought it, which is where the warranty ends. Within that week, the driver window motor went out and the air conditioner stopped working (it wouldn't cool at all).

I took it to the Dodge dealer here and they fixed both problems with no charge to me. I told them that I refused to pay for it when it wasn't even licensed to me yet and the car wasn't even a year old yet!

Every summer, the air conditioning wouldn't cool good, even after adding freon. It never would get cold at all the entire time I owned it. My 92 Grand Marquis has the best air conditioning I've ever had!

I love the look of the car and the interior design. The trunk is huge and overall, I would love to have another Intrepid. I'm just afraid to buy one based on all of the engine problems I keep hearing about, even on the newer models.

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 from North America

Summary:

The car looks good and drives nice when it is running, but those time are few and far between

Faults:

O2 sensor went bad at 45,000 miles.

Engine seized at 50,000 miles and had the engine rebuilt @ $2500. 8000 miles later the engine seized again and threw a rod.

Replaced the engine with a used 22,000 mile engine at the cost of $3500.

Stabilizer bar in front end had to have the bushings replaced because of a loud knocking noise.

Replaced driver side window motor that had worn brushes. Now new motor is having a difficult time raising the window, sometimes need some manual help.

Currently at 61,000 miles on the car and 23,000 on the engine the check engine light is on and diagnostic code comes up 130/po160. Called the dealership and the service manager could not tell me what the codes meant. I had to bring it in to let a mechanic look at it. Looked up the OBDII codes on the internet and the O2 sensor circuit malfunction (bank 1 Sensor 1) and the O2 sensor circuit no activity detected (bank 2 Sensor 2). So now what?

General Comments:

When I was experiencing trouble the first time with the engine I notified Dodge and they stated that they were not having any problems with this engine. I spoke to a Dodge mechanic and he stated that they are getting "crate" engines in all the time and are constantly replacing this engine. At that point in time trying to find a used engine was impossible. Every salvage yard I contacted stated that as soon as they get one in it is gone. The second time was a little easier to find one, but the least expensive one I found had 60,000 miles on it so I opted to pay $2700 for a 22,000 mile motor and another$800 misc. fees. Oh yea, the area rep stated also that he knew of no problems either.

Was your engine a 2.7? Those have some known problems, but those problems are easily avoidable. It's really your fault for not looking further into preventative maintenance. Also... You know what "oil" is? It's keeps engines from seizing. You need to change it every now and then. If your engine was a 2.7, the easiest way to avoid the problem is to use synthetic.

www.2gss.org deals with Stratus's, but they have the 2.7 also. Look for "2.7" in the forums, and you'll find out not only how to prevent seizure, but what causes it, how often it happens, as well as how to see if your engine is even susceptible for it.

I wish I would have seen these review before I got my Intrepid! Your title speaks my language :\ AWESOME car, beautiful both inside and out, but I have to agree, the engine is very poorly built.
