"Fun, quick, toy, but can be very expensive"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Battery went out at 120,000 miles.

Ball joint went out at 119,000 Miles.

Engine is starting to use a lot of oil.

Interior is starting to wear badly.

Clutch is starting to go.

Gearbox is starting to go.

General comments?

This car handles like a dream. It hugs corners like no vehicle I have ever driven. Is it also very quick for a 1.8 5 speed, extremely fun to drive. However, this being a foreign car, and not made any more, parts are very expensive, and mildly difficult to work with. It is a fun toy to have around, but nothing I would rely on to get me around every day.

Its not an import, its American made and they took the ideas from the eclipse. but that's alright cause its still a great car with lots of parts that can be added to it.

I'll admit that my 93 eagle talon Dl was a lot of fun to drive and did hug corners like no other front wheel drive car. However, it have spent close to 3500 in repairs and upgrades, and I will never get my money back. It started leaking a lot or using a lot of oil, then blew the headgasket. After I replaced that myself, the rings went and the engine blew eventhough the compression was good across the board. Not to mention something different was wrong with it every week.

My advice is clean it up, tune the engine up, and put a "for sale" sign on it. These cars fall apart after 100,000 miles, and you will never get the money back that you put into them. Your engine is telling you its going to need a rebuild soon since it uses a lot of oil (bad rings/bearings), and your clutch is shot (will cost you 700 to 1000 to fix).

If you really like these cars like I did, buy an tsi awd. They are much faster, handle much better, and generally are more fun to drive. I have a 95 Eagle Talon TSI AWD, and it turned out to be a hell of a lot better than my unreliable 93 dl. Its my project/summer toy, and was well worth it. Not to mention there is a huge aftermarket and a wealth of knowledge and parts on the internet for the awd models.

I know some of the dl's are very reliable cars and last to 200,000 miles, but from my experience the parts are too expensive and hard to find. Do yourself a favor and don't think those problems aren't going to become huge and costly. If you want a toy and like dsm's, buy the awd car. They are cheap and plentiful, and have a much better resale value. Otherwise you might end up like me with a 115,000 mile, 2500 pound lawn ornament that nobody wants (can't even get 700 bucks for my 93 dl).
