1991 Ford Escort LX from North America

Summary:

Great first car

Faults:

Replaced spark plugs, headlights, clutch breaks. nothing that this many miles wouldn't need anyways.

General Comments:

This has been a very reliable car. got it in high school and 4 years later still running perfect, great gas. has more power than people think. seats are pretty comfy. road noise is loud, and ride is pretty bumpy, but other than that a great car.

1991 Ford Escort LX 1.9L 4 Cylinders from North America

Summary:

Inexpensive and WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Faults:

My Alternator went 3 times within 5,000 miles. This was due to faulty Die-hard equipment.

I had to replace headlight, taillight, and interior dome bulbs,

I had to replace driver's visor

Only real money spent on the car was 60K maintenance and new tires and brakes (not a reflection on the car at all)

The only thing is it is possible that the transmission is going out, but given this vehicles pristine record for reliability, I am guessing that it is a simple loose screw.

General Comments:

I absolutely LOVE THIS CAR. It is a very reliable and wonderful car. I plan on my next car being a Ford Focus because I am quite happy with what this car has done for me.

1991 Ford Escort LX 1.9 Liter 4 Cylinder from North America

Summary:

A really good car to own and a fun car to drive!!!

Faults:

My alternator failed 3 times in a 5,000 mile period because of defective Die-hard alternator.

The black lining on the exterior part of the windows have started to peel.

Every other reason to take this car in to the dealer has been for maintenance.

General Comments:

This car hands really well and has really good pickup for a car in its class and age. It is really nice and comfortable inside. I have gotten my money's worth out of this car FOR SURE!!!

1991 Ford Escort GT 1.8 DOHC from North America

Summary:

The power is great for the size and economy.

Faults:

My timing belt broke at 174,000 km.

My cold air intake sensor broke, causing the car to believe it was -20 degrees Celsius all the time. This caused the car to flood, and the check engine light to stay on.

The passenger side automatic seatbelt sticks sometimes, and won't release.

General Comments:

The power is amazing for a 1.8L non-turbo engine, I just can't believe the acceleration.

The handling and turning is great.

The only drawback I have is headroom with the sunroof. I'm over 6' and my head almost touches the roof.

1991 Ford Escort LX 1.9 from North America

Summary:

Economical Escort

Faults:

The belt tensioner keeps breaking since I installed a k&n filter.

The coolant sensor is bad so the check coolant light is on.

General Comments:

The car isn't too bad to drive.

The car isn't tiny, but yet gets great gas mileage.

If you're in the market for a used car in any price range consider an escort.

1991 Ford Escort CLX 1.8 diesel from Slovenia

Summary:

Slow, but cheap and modest oil burner

Faults:

Nothing bigger and expensive went bad. Never let me down in 5 years and 100.000 km.

Regular service every 10.000 km (oil, filters) at independent mechanic. Changed belt at 200.000 km.

Some problems with suspension (stabilizer, rear shock absorber)

Valves very noisy and feel like they are doing their last km, but has been so since I got it.

Body shows it's age (rust, scratches).

General Comments:

Low fuel consumption for engine this old (1.8l 44 KW). Once did 50 mpg driving very soft and without bigger acceleration. In average returns 45 mpg and can never consume more than 35 mpg even if driving very hard (90 mph highway, urban cycle with acceleration).

Absolute nightmare for overtaking (factory specification 18 s from 0 to 60 mph!), have to be very careful not to overestimate his performance. If driving hard very loud and feels faster than it is. 4th gear pulls from 30 mph through 100 mph on the counter. 2nd gear goes till 50 mph on the counter, which is very high for this oil-burner.

Without any equipment (no steering wheel, power windows, ABS, central locking...).

Cheap to maintain. Spacy, a lot of room.

I agree with your comments.

I had the same car and I have also problems with the power windows and the power keys (i place them on 95-original parts) but windows stuck -usually when they opened and I was very unhappy with that.

I sold it on 99.
