2002 Ford Mondeo Ghia TDCi from UK and Ireland - Comments

13th Oct 2002, 06:59

"Will I drive a petrol again? Probably not!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Washer bottle dipstick has snapped off from the twist cap.

Springs in the drivers seat have started creak.

General comments?

The diesel engine in the car is amazing. It picks up like a petrol and the amount of torque is unbelievable - pulling like a train. Overtaking is a breeze.

Handling and road holding is superb too giving the driver great confidence. The car really does feels its on rails.

The Climate Control seems to ebb and flow. When you want it cold, it's hot and vice versa, but I can live with it by manually adjusting the temperature dials.

MPG on average is 40 to 45, although a motorway run at a steady 70mph will return well into the 50's.

As with most diesels, the Mondeo is noisy on first start up, but when the engine has warmed up, the noise level drops.

Totally agree with your review. The springs on the drivers seat of my Mondeo creak too. Think its something to do with the lumbar support. My Zetec doesn't have climate control, but I still find the heating temperamental, it takes an age to get heated up then becomes too hot! No other probs though.

I wrote the original review above and here's an update:

At the Mondeo's first service, the washer bottle dipstick and creaking seat were both fixed under warranty.

Still going well with no problems.

From Spain (Madrid). Mondeo 130CV TDCi Ghia. 6 months old. 10200 Kms.

Absolutely in agreement with what you wrote.

The engine is amazing! Nothing in common with my previous VW petrol 90CV!

Stability, comfort and brakes are excellent.

My driver seat does not have any creek noises.

But:

Every time I start the car and go forward a couple of meters I can hear a "crack" when turning the steering wheel. Just once.

I notice the engine vibration in the pedals when no gear is engaged. Specially the clutch. My brother has the same model and I cannot notice the vibration in theirs.

The turbo is extremely noisy between 150 and 180 Kms/h.

Minor issues:

It is easy to switch the radio off when engaging 1st or 3rd gear.

It is also easy to change volume of channel in the radio when moving the left knee.

Its funny you mention turning the radio off when changing gear. I used to do that in my old Mondeo ST24. I'm glad it wasn't only me. It wasn't a big problem unless I was singing along to one of my favourite tunes and suddenly there would be this silence and just me still singing sounding like a foghorn.

Hi, this is from Spain. I just bought a TDCI 115 HP. Noise from the engine is something not so important as it disappears after few meters running, but the main problem for me is the continuous air noise coming from the windows (front, back and rear) Does anyone have the same problem? I have tried several others and found the same problem. It seems that FORD does not have any solution available.

Hi, I have a 2003 130 tdci mondeo ghia and on a recent trip the engine lacked power, as if the engine management came on, or the turbo died. after stopping and starting the engine normal power resumed, but after you reach 3rd gear the engine won't rev past 3000, it feels like a limiter is fitted. out of gear it will rev easily to 5ooo. any ideas?

Hi, with reference to the lack of power at 3,000 rpm, sounds like it could be the air mass mete, sometimes called MAF sensor. Not a very big job, but can be expensive (about £120 for the part for my passat tdi. You could try e-bay, but make sure you order the correct one. Hope this helps.

It might not be the suspension. I had a bad squeak coming from the back of my 5 door Mondeo, After 3 months I figured it out. It was coming from the latch on the fold-down rear seats. I thought it was from the suspension because I only ever noticed it when going slow over bumpy surfaces. It is caused by minute flexing of the chassis. It was on the left side.

Cure : a dab of grease on the catch bar and catch... Here is a test. In a quiet environment reverse your left rear wheel up onto a low curb (say 2 / 4 inches. Squeak!

Fold down rear seat... Now reverse onto the same kerb... NO SQUEAK! Eurika. (Took me 3 months to discover)

Hi, I've got a 04 2.0 130ps tdci. Everything is fine with the car apart from when you start it, the fan goes onto full, no radio. If you turn the radio on, the fan goes back to normal. Also if you turn the side lights on, then off, it sorts it all out. Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thanks.
