1996 Ford Mustang GT 4.6L from North America

Summary:

This car goes fast

Faults:

The car is a good car, but when I first bought it the manifold blew and I had to replace it. By the way, it's a recall, but I never knew.

And now it has this weird computer problem, that makes the overdrive symbol blink and makes the car drive only up to 40kms. It's in the shop right now to get that fixed.

General Comments:

The car is one hell of a car, it has so much power and the looks to go with it, everybody loves it.

1996 Ford Mustang Cobra 4.6 DOHC from North America

Summary:

American power!

Faults:

Master cylinder broke, luckily at a slow speed. Managed to hit a wall (no brakes) and dented my front bumper.

Alternator died.

Ionizer died, 2 times.

Clutch blew at around 25k miles, had it replaced with a performance clutch.

The dealers lack the brains, patience, and personality to sell boiled peanuts, much less cars.

General Comments:

This car was THE bomb. Super fast. I modified a lot i.e. supercharger, full exhaust system, air intake, etc. But even before that it was a cheap rocket. Modifications for it were cheap and impacted performance tremendously. It has the ability to house 500 horses under the hood for under 5 grand.

On top of this the seats were well formed, made the American way. Long road trips were surprisingly comfortable. The sound system that came with it was never touched, it was always a wonderful addition.

The paint job on this one (Mystic) was amazing. I got looks from everyone, it was a classic cruiser car.

Considering its low cost, and super high performance, the problems I had with it figure into the overall value. I could easily blow away the most expensive Japanese or German imports in a car 1/2 the price. Its comfort level exceeded those cars as well.

I have a 2006 V6 Mustang. The "check engine" light comes on for no reason -- Mechanics cannot tell me why. Have you discovered the solution for your problem with this issue? Raymond.

Raymond, the check engine light on Fords is just VERY sensitive, and usually means nothing. We had a '96 Mustang, and the light came on several times. Each time just tightening the gas cap or running a tank of premium through it solved the problem. We had the same problem with our 3 Explorers. The light is programmed on most cars to come on at certain intervals so you will take it to the dealer and give them $500 to turn it off. As a mechanic I've learned to just turn the light off myself and ignore it. The light on my Dodge came on at 40,000, 80,000, 120,000, 160,000, 200,000 and 240,000 miles. Each time I just turned it off and kept going. Yours may just be coming on because it is programmed to at this point. I'd just try turning it off.

Jim.

1996 Ford Mustang GT 4.6 from North America

Summary:

My car turns heads and dusts any Camaro

Faults:

When I first got the car the whole transmission went out and had to be replaced. The dealer replaced it with a new 98' tranny under the warranty that we got, bumper to bumper 75,000 miles.

Since then I've had to perform only routine maintenance as per the owners manual.

General Comments:

This car is awesome.

If you are very tall, over 6'2" tall your legs will want more room, but other that that it's an awesome car.

I've added a lot of bolt-ons that have added about 60 hp+ without a supercharger. I added all of them myself without a problem and I'm no professional mechanic.

Dusts any camaro??? are you only comparing against a V-6?

Everybody knows a stock mustang will NOT beat a stock Camaro in the same class. A Z28 will whip any GT and an SS will beat a Cobra. That's all there is to it. If you look in any car magazine it will tell you this (excluding any Ford enthusiast mag).
