1989 Ford Probe LX Not sure from North America

Summary:

Sporty, great gas mileage, pretty low for insurance: overall a great starter car

Faults:

My alternator went once, but from what I hear, that is common. The way to prevent this from recurring is to take the battery out (when your alternator goes) and do a slow trickle charge until it is completely recharged. This way the alternator doesn't struggle to do so and shorten it's life.

Part of the passenger power door mechanism broke (a plastic/nylon pulley). This was easily replaced by one at a junk yard. About $40, instead of $125 new.

General Comments:

This car runs great. It's 14 years old at this point and I get 33-34 miles to the gallon on the highway and about 29 miles to the gallon around town.

I've had to put almost no money into this car for repairs. I had to replace the passenger window when it was smashed in (they stole a book of about 200 Cd's). And just recently I had to replace a piece of trim from the center console, and my after market stereo when someone tried to steal the radio.

My only complaint about this car is that it's a target for theft because it's sporty and easy to "slim-Jim" the doors.

1989 Ford Probe GT 2.2L turbo Intercooled from North America

Summary:

Very epuiped and performant for a compared price!!

Faults:

No trouble at all except caliper brakes have to be lubricated each year to prevent rusted calipers.

General Comments:

After 240,000Km my engine don't take any oil or coolant and the compression of the 4 cylinders are again at 135. No turbo trouble!! and The motor and transmission has never been open to be repaired! Very satisfied, but you have to know if the last person has take care to it.

1989 Ford Probe GT 2.2 turbo from North America

Summary:

This car is a great deal if you get it in good condition

Faults:

My engine was replaced at 168000 miles when the head warped. It warped because the water pump was leaking and it caused it to overheat.

Radiator cracked at 173500 miles.

General Comments:

This car is a lot of fun to drive. It wasn't taken good care of at all before I got it, and I've spent quite a bit of money and time getting everything back in good condition. I love the turbocharger.

It is hard to find parts for this model though. It took me a long time to find someone to replace the engine.

With the sole exception of the paint on the plastic spoiler part, the body and the paint are in great condition. It's still on its first paint job, and after a wash it still looks brand new. The paint on the spoiler has burnt right off.

1989 Ford Probe GT 2.2 turbo from North America

Summary:

Speed and comfort in one

Faults:

CV Boots need to be replaced many times.

Master Break Cylinder has been replaced 3 times.

Driver side window has been repaired once and is in need to be repaired again.

A/C has been repaired a few times and is in need to be repaired.

Turbo has been replaced once due to over boost to 17+? psi via an HKS VBC at about 130,000 miles.

General Comments:

I put in many HKS modifications, a race clutch, and performance anti roll bars.

The engine is very responsive and has very little turbo lag.

It handles very well.

The sound it creates is outstanding. The HKS exhaust is very deep and the turbo very high and loud. The combination amazes people.

A non turbo, stock ford probe? 145 mph? I don't think so.

If you don't think so, you don't have one. It is a very impressive car, mine will never be for sale.

145 MPH? I think it would be more along the lines of 145 KMH. I have an 89 Ford Probe LX and the fastest I ever took it was 112 and it wouldn't go any faster. I've been told that there is a speed limit on the engine at 113-114 and that the engine revs down to 3 grand and the gas is cut from the engine until the speed goes down.
