General Comments:

I don't understand why so many people really hate this car. I love it, it's a great car!!

I've used it to go on vacations with my family, no problems so far. Handles great. Very reliable!

Sure it's not a perfect car, but hey! What did you expect from these bargain prices! I've got mine for $1300 all power, cruise, tilt etc. Everything works. Great car for students!

1991 Ford Taurus Station Wagon 3.8 from North America

Summary:

Disappointed with dealership service

Faults:

We have had major problems with the timing belt and the motor. The timing belt broke last year when my husband was out of town. We discovered that there had been a recall on the timing belt for that model year, but our Ford dealer said that they wouldn't honor the recall because our car was made in a non-recall factory (even though from our research there were timing belt problems from that factory).

Now we have just found out that our motor was damaged when the timing belt broke. Apparently there was a hairline crack in the motor that is now larger and causing problems. We will need to replace the motor because of a recall problem that Ford has refused to honor.

General Comments:

I have found that Ford dealerships in general are not dependable. I purchased another vehicle from a local dealership new, and was told that they would take care of me. When I brought the vehicle in for service because there was an anti-freeze smell (still under warranty) and there was a musty odor coming from the air vents. I was told there was nothing wrong with it and to spray it out with Lysol. This was a problem that was present right from the beginning when I bought the car.

I decided to bring the car next time to a different dealership and asked them for a tune-up, and also to check it over. They found a hairline crack in the radiator (surprise, surprise) which was causing an antifreeze smell and musty odor. They offered to fix it for us for the tidy sum of $400. Of course, it was now off warranty. I took it to the local mechanic and they charged $100 for a weld job. It works fine. The musty odor and antifreeze smell are gone.

We purchased the Taurus from a third dealership. So far I have found three dealerships that I will not bring my vehicle to. Those are the only three in our general area. I am highly disappointed with Ford "Service".

I can see that you are not very aware of dealerships. It should be known to anyone that buys a vehicle, that dealerships will lie through their teeth to anyone that is willing to buy a vehicle. There are very few dealers that are out there for the customer, they are out there to sell you a vehicle, and for them to get your money, and that goes for GM, Chrysler, Ford, and Foreign vehicle dealerships.

1991 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 from North America

Summary:

Highly reliable

Faults:

I've changed the following: timing belt, water pump, inner and outer tie rods, belts, and a full engine tune up.

General Comments:

I do not understand why people bash the Taurus, because if you treat your cars with a little bit of respect and take care of them, they will last. Keep your foot off the floor and you can reduce tons of problems caused by driving the car beyond what it was designed for. If you wanted a Mustang you should of bought one then. The Taurus is a passenger car that adequately performs its job and is extremely reliable.

I agree completely! Although I will never own a Ford ever again... I had a 1991 Taurus L which was a very nice family sedan until my son got his licence. If the car was driven for what its meant to be drivin like then it would have had lasted a lot longer then it did. I know many people with a Taurus who haven't had any major problems because of this reason. Like you said "If they wanted a Mustang then they should have bought one" That's the reason why I don't want another Ford... cause I find that the performance of even their Mustang isn't to my liking. But its perfect for someone who isn't a car addict like myself. And is looking for this kind of car!

While getting the trans repaired in my Ranger the shop gave me a 91 Taurus L to drive. I was impressed! Yes it was rusty, but quick acceleration, good handling, and Wow! Comfortable! The seats are so plush and inviting. The rear seat is at such an angle the passengers look like they are ready for a rocket launch. But it is very pleasant to sit in that position on such nice seats. And the cabin is super roomy.
