1987 Holden Commodore VL 3.0 liter six cylinder turbo from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

VL comes with a funeral voucher. It's crazy!!

Faults:

Had to replace A/C vent when I got it.

Needed to make modifications eg: sports exhaust, extractors and sports suspension.

General Comments:

This car is in immaculate condition and goes like it was something in the movies.

Very easy to modify and has a lot of potential.

A good clean VL can be anywhere between $4500-12000. Just watch the K's on em.

1987 Holden Commodore VL RB30E from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A sophisticated, smooth ride for a reasonable price

Faults:

Loss of oil pressure at high RPM for extended periods (eg. traveling up hills) due to the oil pump struggling because of a clogged oil strainer from the sump.

Tappet replaced at approx 147,000km.

Distributor plug deteriorated.

General Comments:

Very clean, quiet car with smooth acceleration and good throttle response past 70km/h.

Good for cruising on long trips with reasonable fuel economy.

Stock suspension is very rough.

Possible modifications for better response: new air filter, 2.5in exhaust and Fueltronics chip?

1987 Holden Commodore VL 3.0 turbo from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Good price, drives like nothing else. Hi-Po icon

Faults:

Quite a bit.

Engine and gearbox died on me about a year ago, but all is good now and driving beautifully.

General Comments:

Great to drive. The VL Turbo isn't that quick as standard, but it's still pretty impressive.

I fitted a blow off valve and that car sounds wicked, turns every single head. Haven't done many mods mechanically as I'm not willing to spend the money at this point in time. I am probably going to sell the beast soon, and buy something practical, like a Lancer.

I'm sure gonna miss its growling, hissing and shooting people with my blow off valve. hehe. ;)

Great first car, couldn't have asked for anything else. Turbo maaayyttee!!

Leaking rear screen in the corner.

1987 Holden Commodore VL Berlina 3.0 Nissan inline 6 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Good looks and some power

Faults:

Ummm... nothing until my transmission melted the other month. $1850 to rebuild, 12 month warranty.

The immobiliser was so good that even I couldn't get into the car half the time.. sitting in your car after 12pm in the cinema car park and your car won't start ain't a good thing... so that got ripped out... that's about it.

General Comments:

I bought it because my budget at the time was about 7K. It was marked up at 7k and I got it for 6k.

It's white with the grey bumpers... pursuit rims, 225's all round, dark tint, rear spoiler, Sony CD, Momo steering wheel, velour Berlina interior and all Berlina options... electric aerials rock!!

1987 Holden Commodore VL 3.0L EFI from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Handles great and power to boot!

Faults:

Air con needed regassing

Replacement of a steering rack and power steering pump.

Crank angle sensor stopped sensing (Car refused to even start).

Corroded head (purchased 2nd hand engine to replace).

General Comments:

But, my car is getting a little high in the mileage and did belong to an 18 year old guy previously so it has probably had a wee bit of a hard life. Looking back, he was probably more concerned on how good the car looked than on actually maintaining it mechanically, and now the lack of maintenance is telling...

But it is still one of the best cars I have owned.

Please, you must not have driven many cars before. The VL does not handle well at all. In fact, I believe one of the most dangerous cars on the road. I would suggest that you tried driving an Italian car and then see if you believe the handling is really that good. Just a suggestion.

Kind Regards,

James.

1987 Holden Commodore Vacationer 3.0L 6 cylinder from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Natural born V8 killers

Faults:

Two weeks after I got the car I crashed it into a pole just outside my house. It was wet and my car was running premium unleaded, I had 4 friends in the car with me. I took off from the lights and my car just limoed in first gear then came second, by this time we were doing about 55km/h and the car was on a 90 degree angle. It continued on for about 15 meters then it did a 180 degree turn and smashed into the pole.

After that it went into the panel shop for repairs. Full panel repairs and a 2Pak white paint job, the car was looking better than ever but I was out of pocket for about $4000.

Three days after it came out of the panel shop the car just died while I was driving and just managed to roll home. Later I found that it was the crank angle sensor (another $525).

Having spent the best part of $5000 on the car on top of the purchase price I decided to do it up a bit.

Next came the extractors and exhaust, then a uni filter, then a stage 3 head and cam all finely tuned by a Chiptorque performance chip.

To cut a long story short, $23500 later I had a V8 killer, that looks good and had a killer interior and stereo.

Best cars ever made!

Absolutely sweet. I can only dream of having my VL up to those standards. Please could you send me some pics, or details on what you did, and how you did it. I'm deciding what next to do to mine, cold air induction, or fix up the suspension and lower it 2 inches.

You spent $525 on a crank angle sensor, god damn you can get them for $120 from Repco and they are made by the same people. You should try a turbo with the same mods, they absolutely haul.
