I have a VR Commodore, which is playing up, hard to start, then gurgles for few seconds and clears up, then the auto transmission will hold gears till like 5000 rpm, then change new plugs, leads, oil throttle body cleaned. Had it to mechanic and came up with no faults. Someone help me please...

Purchased my VR for 2 grand and then spent an additional $1200 on a new power steering rack and pump, plus a new harmonic balancer!

It still needs a few little things done to it, but it gets me to work and back without missing a beat every day (130 km round trip).

Since it's on gas, it costs me around $35 to fill it - which gets me between 350 and 400 kms down the road!

It runs like a dream - very happy with my purchase to date!

Good on ya mate. 12.5 quarter mile. Pull the other one.

It's your fuel injectors. It is going to cost you about 700 in parts and labor.

Try changing the throttle position sensor; about $45.

Try the coolant temp sensor under the thermostat housing.

Sound like either you have a loose fuse or a faulty brake light switch, which is only $20 to replace.

The back lights that work when they want can be fixed easily - we had same problem; one day a man came up and said just use a slightly bigger screw, and make sure it's tight... Not had the problem since... Dunno if would work for you though?

If your VR takes 2-3 seconds to drop down a gear, you should get it checked out. The VR series brought out 2 different types of transmission. You need to make sure you have the correct one; it not only does serious damage to the trans, but also the diff and clutch..

The tapping could be either the injectors, or there could be a problem with the valves. You should get it checked ASAP, as it could result in serious damage if it's the valves. A lot of the time it won't be a problem, but you wouldn't want to take the risk of letting it ride.

I own a VR Commodore, and mine had a problem with starting as well. Then when it did, it would run rough for a few seconds. It also blew black smoke on start up. If yours is doing the same, it is fairly safe to say fuel pressure regulator. Fixed mine.

Hello can you tell us how you fixed the heater plug please? We have just done ours, and the stubborn thing is half stuck in the motor

Thanks.

Hey guys, I've got a VR Commodore Ute, and recently got new motor put in it, and it's round the 20 000km mark now.

Just started to have a few problems pop up when idling. It sort of shutters a bit, and a few times has stalled when taking off, as well as turning into park. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? That would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Hi,

Can someone give me an idea how much would a 1994 Commodore Auto Executive be worth if I sold it privately? It's immaculate; no rust, no dents, and I have basically kept it perfectly maintained; new radiator, and water pump, fan belt, and a new battery last year, but just now the odometer stopped at 170,000 klms, and I'm not sure if it's worth anything or worth fixing anymore. The mechanic says the gearbox shows some minor oil leaks (transmission specialist says there is no problems with it changing gears). Also he said the front end needs new shocks and rubbers, and possibly maybe tie rods - car yard offered me 500.00 as a trade in... Is that about right?

My VR (auto) has the same problem changing from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd. It revs like crazy 4000-5000 before it will change up. When it finally changes up a gear, it clunks into gear. I'm going to end up with whip lash!

I need to know causes for this problem! Preferably not the entire trans, because the mechanic's quote is insane!

It seems to only be when I've driven it back and forth all day, or in the hottest part of the day (I live in the tropics, so hot is really hot), but morning drives or just one trip a day; it purrs like a kitten.

My VR trans lost 1 and 4 at the same time. Don't really know what happened. It's at about 400 000 kms though, but they are an excellent car. Plenty of power. BTW, the V6 in mine runs like a dream.

I am looking for a VS wagon for 500 around Newcastle. If yours is one, email me, I would appreciate that thanks.

What's the wheel that spins telling the gearbox how fast the car is going? My tranny is having problems like what you have said, and I might check this out. Thanks.

Hi. I have a VR V6 Commodore automatic. My car stalls in park, and when I come to a stop, the revs go to about 3 and then change, and I also have a tapping noise that I can never seem to find. I'm stumped as to what's wrong with the car.

7th Apr 2013, 20:03

Problems with the coil pack; change the coils and that will fix your problems.

11th Apr 2013, 15:54

Hey mate, I had a tapping noise in my 1995 VR Commy. Well it was more like a thump or a knock, and I found out it was coming from the rear of the engine. I never found out what it was. I replaced the engine; as I'm a mechanic, it was a few hour job, but as I was stripping down the engine, I found that the balance shaft had a rock in it, and also the timing chain was quite loose and noisy.

Try checking the idle valve.

When they are stuck or not working properly, they have very high idle.

Do a compression testing as well just in case it has a blown gasket.

Hey, my VR 94 mod isn't going into fourth gear much at all, or when it does it clicks back and forward into 3rd?? I have to drive long distances everyday, and need HELP ASAP? Could that be the cause?

Hi, I have a 1994 VR Holden Commodore. I have put in a new battery and spark plugs, but it's still hard to start. When it starts, it runs rough. Please help me with what to do next.

16th Jan 2015, 10:48

Not even man! I spent $220 on green top injectors (seals and all), put em in in an hour or so. While you're at it, new coils, leads and plugs :)

11th Aug 2015, 07:44

Replace the air intake valve and then get someone to check the computer.

Hi, I have a 1993 VR Commodore with a Buick V6 motor. It has a bad miss and cuts out as if out of gas. I have changed the sensor and body module. It's still playing up. Could it be an electrical fault or not? Pulling my hair out, please help.

I drive a 1994 VR SS V8. Owner of 7 years. Never had a problem except the window washing receptacle empties itself of water within a day. Any ideas and many thanks?

28th Jun 2017, 04:21

I have a 1994 VR V6; "very torquey down low, awesome car with only 178,000, love where the torque comes in, 3200RPM". Put it this way, it beats a VT V6.

2nd Oct 2018, 23:59

Did you find a fix for it at all?
