1991 Honda Accord DX from North America - Comments

"A good dependable car, plenty of power, nice and roomy too"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Twice, the side mirrors have just inexplicably flopped - became useless! At $100 each, that's a real pain!

Had to have the driver visor replaced due to it being sheared off by the automatic seat belt.

General comments?

Overall, this is a wonderful car - powerful, comfortable, and extremely reliable, and the dealership is the best (I had a Subaru before, and lived in three states - always terrible service).

Conversely, I have a real problem with some design issues - the automatic seatbelts, the wind scream if the windows are open, the terrible defroster and fresh air system - in fact, there IS no fresh air! It is heated engine air! You must use the air conditioner for fresh air, and it's frigid.

Also don't care for the tinny body. The doors sometimes need to be closed twice. Had a terrible problem with window rolling up; the rubber gasket catching & rolling window up crooked!

This car has a terrible time fogging up, and doesn't defrost without the air conditioner on.

The radio/cassette is very poor quality.

Locking the front driver door once you're out is a real pain too - my sister had to show me how to do it without the key.

Mediocre fuel efficiency.

I love my Honda Accord DX 1991 -250,000miles- it is hard to give it up. I would do everything keep it for the next 10 years. The only problem I have been having is defrosting.

AMZ.

Our 1991 Accord is an excellent car except for the following:

Replaced clutch at 215000 miles.

Steering wheel still shakes at all speeds.

Tires are kept aligned and rotated, but front ones wear rapidly.

Replaced alternator at 220,000 miles.

Started replacing fuses.

Primary fan may not be working all the time. Now A/C is gone. Had new O-rings and various A/C parts replaced, freon leaks fixed, compressor is fine, new freon added and still get hot air from two left vents and slightly cooler air from two right vents. Local GM Mechanics suggest it is a clogged evaporator? Local Honda dealer does not respond to my questions, so I have to use the GM dealers. Any suggestions? We would like to fix the AC problem ourselves if possible.

My 1991 Accord has proved to be a very reliable car.

Like a previous reviewer, both my sideview mirrors had to be replaced 12 years ago.

The driver's side window has been difficult to roll up for a little over a decade now.

The car is still a daily driver and averages 34 mpg if I keep it under 75 on the interstate. Spare parts are very easy to find, even though the car is old enough to drive itself.

I inherited one of these cars, and it was awesome basic transportation for several years. I only traded it recently because it does not have airbags or any other modern safety features for that matter. It has these bizarre electric seat belts which are a headache. It also has some problematic Honda design quirks like a weird rear motor mount, which is prone to failure, cheesy suspension and brakes and an inaccessible oil filter, but reliability is nothing to complain about considering it's old enough to vote.
