1990 Honda Civic GL 1.5 16v from Netherlands

Summary:

A great car: reliable, economic and FAST!

Faults:

- A new timing belt and alternator belt at 100000 km.

- 4 new tyres.

- It became really rusty arround the rear arches.

General Comments:

I purchased the car about a year ago, and no real problems have occurred to me.

The car is really fast, I have driven it over 180 km/h with 4 people and when driving it at a normal speed, about 120 km/h, it's very economic: about 500 km on 30 liters of fuel.

For a small car (about 900 kg) it's interior is very large. There's enough space for four people, even when you are a large person. The only problem is the trunk, but with the back seats folded down I can easily get my bike in the trunk.

Because of the low weight and low insurance it's really cheap to drive this car, but when you consider buying one, check it for rust!

1990 Honda Civic EX 4-Door Sedan - White 1.6L EFI from North America

Summary:

It's nice to drive, but woe is me for spending too much on it

Faults:

The smart old-timer who sold it to me (second owner) sold it at the right time, because it needed a LOT of what I would consider spendy, but normal-use maintenance when I got it, as follows:

1. New tires (I got Bridgestones at Costco) ; = $200

2. New radiator (I got a Modine--the best) = $200;

3. New left axle ("CV joint") = $150;

4. New Main Relay (located way up under the dash on the drivers' side) = $100;

5. New Shift Position Indicator switch = $100;

6. A/C retrofit = $150

That's around $1,000, and considering I was stupid and bought it for $2,150 the day after my divorce I might add! I now have over $3,0000 into a vehicle with a $2,000 book value!

General Comments:

It's roomy for a small car, and I'm 6'2". Handles well. The motor at 188,000 miles seems still strong and uses little or no oil between oil changes. I would perhaps buy another Honda, but ONLY after doing a full pre-purchase inspection and check, and keep it at or near book value!

1990 Honda Civic 1.6 16i 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very good reliable comfortable car

Faults:

So far nothing has failed on it and the car has only needed some very minor parts replacing for MOT (cost me less than £70 including the cost of test itself).

General Comments:

Love it!! This car is great it is so many things in one car. It's a small workhorse, the seats collapse to leave a very good sized boot which has moved all my stuff between flats on a couple of occasions. It's a little sports car capable of leaving many things behind! It's a little city run around that will chop and change lanes in an instant, and I can always get through those little gaps that BMW's get stuck in!! Lastly its very reliable (touching some wood here) so far in the two years I have had it I have done nothing to it. Has a bit of rust which I will need to get sorted for next MOT, but mechanically its seems sweet, and the engine really purrs. Only bad point with mine is that the brakes slightly bind from time to time, which of course is a bummer as it slows me down!!

1990 Honda Civic 1.6 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Cheap, reliable and very fun

Faults:

Nothing serious, just wear and tear after 14 years on the road.

AC didn't work.

Brakes replaced (they were pretty thin on purchase)

Exhaust was on the way out.

Key didn't work in drivers side door.

General Comments:

This was my first car and I rolled it a week ago. I love the car so much I'm considering just cutting the roof off and calling it a convertible. I don't want to part with it.

Fuel economy was above average and consistent regardless of how hard the engine was pushed.

Handling was great and the interior was well maintained (last owner was a female).

For a 1.6 lt engine this car could scream out some impressive sounds.

Started first time every time, Extraordinarily reliable.

The car is a champ. I bought one like yours last year (2004) too.

Its really reliable and the only problem I came across with is the brakes. The car is very economically even though I high rev it most of the time.
