"Piece of crap"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Transfer case seals blew at 10000 kms yet vehicle has never been off road.

Slinger on transfer case now replaced 3 times in last 900 kms (2months)!

Disgusting fuel mileage. 11-17mpg depending on the weather.

Egg beater sound in rear ends... have had to have them replaced at 11000 kms.

Brake failure four times. Most recently ran into garage after having them inspected by dealer. Currently having proportioning valve replaced.

General comments?

This is by far the most disappointing vehicle that I have ever owned. Am currently looking into buyback with Daimler Chrysler and have filed a claim with CAMVAP (Canadian Automotive Vehicle Arbitration Plan).

Have now been without vehicle for 13 days and it is still at the dealers "being repaired".

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences. I own a 2003 Liberty Sport and love it to death. It has kept me safe in a couple of very close calls. I was driving down the highway (I-40) one morning on the way to work and some woman in an X-Terra comes to a dead stop in the middle of I-40. We were cruising right along at 80mph and she stops. Somebody was tring to get onto the highway and THEY had the yield sign. The woman in front of me nearly caused a 15 car pile up with me being car #2. I seriously thought I overheated the brakes. I had them on the floor. I do not have ABS on mine and the wheels never locked up. She ended up getting off at the same exit as me and at the bottom of the ramp I rolled down my window and gave her a few choice words and kept on going. NO DAMAGE TO THE BRAKES AT ALL! That night when I got home I pulled the wheels off, took apart each brake and everything was A OK. I couldn't believe it. If I had been in my previous car (Ford), it would have fried all the brakes and probably stalled. And most recently, I nearly got T-Boned by a Semi who blew completely through a red light. Called his "How's My Driving" 1-800 number, was patched through to the truck driver and told him off as well. I am very happy with my Liberty. I recently average, believe it or not, 28mpg. That was combined city/highway where ever I need to be driving. And I don't drive like a little old man. I hate being behind people who to the speed limit. When I get to a light, I punch it and pass everybody. I'm very rough on it and it keeps ticking and enjoys every minute of it. The 4WD was unbelievable. This is my first Jeep, and WILL NOT be my last Jeep. I'm Hooked!

If you do not have ABS and your breaks do not lock up when pushed all the way, you might want to get them checked as soon as possible.

It is NOT normal for the brakes NOT to lock all 4 tires when there is no ABS and the brakes pushed as far as they go.

I recently took the Jeep in for it's oil change service last weekend. For kicks I test drove an '04 Sport just too see if the brakes were the same or stronger. They are the same. I do believe that this is some sort of new system that Chrysler has designed to keep them from locking up w/o ABS. I do wish ABS was standard, let me tell you, when you need them, it's a nice thing to have. But it doesn't have them. I was recently in a similar situation the other day where I had to lock up the brakes while going down hill at the last minute to avoid running a light that was turning res (I would have run it had it not been for the cop behind me). Once again, all the way to the floor and they did not lock up. Although this time, it felt like they tried to skid a little in the back, but then it felt like something gave it more power in the back to keep it from skidding. I don't really care. Other than that the brakes work great. They are a little weak compared to some of the other vehicles I've driven. But this thing weighs a ton so that's to be expected.

I am extremely disappointed with my 2002 Liberty Renegade. It is really hit or miss with Chrysler' JEEP brand. We have owned 3 other Jeep Grand Cherokees with no problems at all. While having those, we have heard so many complaints from friends about their Jeeps. Brake problems, transmission problems, rattling, etc. We still currently have a Grand Cherokee Limited 2004, and its great. Now comes my Liberty Renegade. Two weeks after I first purchased it I noticed a loud rattling coming from the rear of the car. It ended up being something lose on the rear axle. Then I complained about noises and the sound of like lose metal near the gear box, dealer said it was nothing. Then the car had difficulty turning somewhat sharply at slow speeds, LOUD screeching noises. Finally I received the recall notice and found out my bearings were totally rusted.. would probably seize soon.. after I had them replaced, wow what a difference in the drive.. Two weeks later THE DEATH OF BERT. liBERTy.. Car is in park near the lake, about to take my jet ski out of the water, its sitting there for about 3 -4 min, no one is in it.. Starts rolling back and right into the lake. Couldn't get to it fast enough.. Chrysler denies all claims, not very helpful, I just want what I lost in that junker..
