2001 Kia Rio 1.5 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Satisfied

Faults:

This car has been good to me. The only thing is a broken exhaust pipe (my fault).

General Comments:

This car's great. It's almost indestructible. Or it has been to me so far. We've taken this off road, through the mud and a small river when it flooded. (engine light came on and it smoked a bit, but nothing much). We lit a firecracker off in this car. Hit a mud hole and suck down to the frame and still got out. Ran the underside of my chassis over curbs. Hit snow banks pushing 35. This car's handled it all well. I've had no problems like some people have written they've had on here.

2001 Kia Rio from North America

Summary:

Very economical; love how simple and reliable it is!

Faults:

Blew O2 sensors, but still keeps running!

General Comments:

Very reliable and economical, does not owe us one cent.

Minimal maintenance required, very basic and very few things to break down (our model does not even have power steering). We have finally outgrown it with 3 children, otherwise I would run it into the ground.

It blew two O2 sensors, but it still runs so we just keep driving it as-is. Sure it sputters from time to time, but it has never failed us yet.

2001 Kia Rio LS 1.5 litre from North America

Summary:

Great except for underpowered and not really comfortable

Faults:

Air bag light comes on for no reason.

Coil pack cracked.

Engine stalled once.

General Comments:

I heard many many complaints about this car the year after I bought it, and lived in fear for a while. I have now for about 9 years and it has been super reliable. It always starts (unless < -30 C and not plugged in). It has never left me stranded. It stalled once after refueling, but the tank was very very low. I only ever changed spark plugs once in 9 years. The coil pack and wires were replaced after 8.5 years and very rough running was resolved. I have never driven this car nicely. It has very little power and I stomped on the gas for the first 6 years and drove it like a race car. It was never maintained properly. The oil changes were sometimes very late, like 2-3 times the recommended km. It has never leaked or burned oil. The A/C still blows cold, never refilled. All power options still work. I think I got one of the few that was not a lemon.

2001 Kia Rio 1.5 gas from North America

Summary:

Decent car for a decent price

General Comments:

Other than lack of power on the 2001 Rio automatic, and the fact I was lied to about the work done on it, it is a good car for in city use. Just make sure to turn the overdrive off using the button on the gearshift. Performs decently on the highway; just have to be careful about wind speed, especially on bridges.

2001 Kia Rio LS from North America

Summary:

A piece of firey hell

Faults:

My transmission went 2 times.

My O2 sensor was replaced 3 times.

Would stop at random; just start to bog down for no reason.

And last but not least; recently I was driving down the road and my car filled with smoke and then caught fire in the fuse panel.

I no longer have a car. Kia says it was a mishap and has never happened, but I have found 6 other people with the same situation.

General Comments:

This car was a money grab and such an inconvenience. I would never buy a Kia again. The dealerships are ignorant and not helpful. They send you away with no answers and an empty wallet.

2001 Kia Rio LX 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Should not be allowed on the market

Faults:

Comparing a Toyota with a Kia is like comparing a caddy to a moped. The Kia Rio was a lemon and was not dependable, the dealer ignored the issues with the car during the warranty period, the workers knew of issues with this year's model Rio, but were unable to provide a solution, stalling, no power.

I spent more time on the side of the road than on the road...

I will never buy anything with the name Kia on it, including its big sister Hyundai.

General Comments:

The car never ran correctly from 3 months of purchase. I would not sell this car to anyone except the owner of the dealer - he deserves to have to drive this car for at least a month, to know exactly what I have been going through for years.

Comfort when you are on the side of the road, there is no comfort.
