2000 Land Rover Freelander TD4 5 door ES from UK and Ireland - Comments

"The safety and purpose of a 4x4 with the comfort of a limo"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing at all to date.

General comments?

Build quality is superb, clearly influenced by Ford.

BMW sourced turbo-diesel is quiet, smooth and incredibly gutsy.

Ride is better than most saloons and equipment is generous.

Economy of only 32 mpg disappoints, but may improve when fully run in.

A bit of a gamble buying it, but no regrets at all now. Superb.

It's a shame Land Rover can't sort their products out before the customer gets them. From your Freelander it would appear the problems are now finally sorted, but it's three years too late for a lot of owners.

Update My TD4 - Now 7,000 miles. Did have a leaking rear window (severe rain mind) fixed under warranty "they all do it" and fine now.

Everything else excellent, not a squeak or rattle. Economy now 35 mpg + and has been a godsend in all these floods.

No regrets.

I've just traded my Jeep Cherokee for a TD4 ES. The Jeep gave me no problems in 4.5 years and to date (not very long) I'm quite impressed with the TD4. I will however be keeping a close eye since reading some of the comments on this site. It is looking like the TD4 ES is the result of what seems to be 3 years of nightmares for some I hope I made a good choice.

Economy so far is excellent at 35+ per gallon, but then I'm used to sub 15 from the Jeep. Comfort is good and everything seems to work although I complained to the dealer about the jumping CD and they ordered me a new one.

If anything else goes wrong I'll be sure to bring it up on here, but in the mean time I would be interested to hear if LR really have sorted the legacy of the previous models in the TD4 ES.

I bought the Landrover Freelander ES TD4 in Dec 2002. Since then I have had recurrent problems with the electrics i.e. the electric windows have jammed, and the electric sunroof has twice jammed open. It was repaired in April 03 & the same problem happened again in Feb 04. And now the automatic gear box has broken. We have been told that it will need a new gear box at an extortionate cost of over £4,000. This is absolutely disgusting on a car that is just over 3 years old, has done only 26,000 miles and has been regularly serviced. Landrover will not accept any responsibility for this & have refused to contribute anything to the cost of repair. They're customer service is appalling & I will never buy from them again.

I am living in Haiti and I have a Land Rover Freelander TD4 Model 2002. The automatic gear box is already broken down. I have only 16.000 kilometers on that car. Now I have to order a new gear box.

After road testing a td4 I was pleasently suprised, but after reading and hearing the horror stories, I have decided to invest my cash elsewhere. the finish was poor on the eighteen month old freelander I tried, indeed, the rear brakr drums were red rusty and finish coming off ancillaries. not a good sign for the future wear and tear. pity because I like the look of it and it drove quite well with a nice auto gearbox. only 12 months warranty offered by landrover which didn, t fill me with confidence. so its off to hyundai for their 5 year warranty and a 4x4 I really like. typical british built motor, when will they reach a high standard and maintain it?.

Bought a TD4 GS new in 2000. Car has broken down 5 times and at time of writing is in for repairs. Always the same problem, fuel pump fails. We have had both fuel pumps replaced again and again. Dealer will only replace which ever pumps turn it is to fail and then charges me £300 + £120 recovery. So we have no idea why suddenly the car will not start. Breaks down every 4-5 months at the moment. A part from that car has been fine.

I picked up me new TD4 Landrover 5 door sport in July 2004 since then I have the following problems-Total electrical faulure twice resulting in 10 days at landrover-Fuel cap fell apart in tank-antenna fell off-rear door had to be adjusted due to excessive noise-noisy front suspension-smell from transmission and finally last week transmission and clutch total failure, this vehicle has 12000 KM from new.

In discussion with landrover for possible return.~Had Jeeps for last 12 years no issues. Totally dissapointed with the vehicle looks good though.
