I am stunned to read all these comments about similar experiences. I own a 2002 RX 300 and it's at 95K miles right now. Lexus tells me it needs a 'rebuilt transmission - $4K. I've done all the maintenance at the dealership and by the books. I can't believe Lexus will not cover this repair given the numerous issues regarding the transmission on this model. Lexus is not worth the price. This is the last Lexus I will own.
5/7/2009 Purchased my RX300 new AWD at 90,000 miles, transmission went out with no warning. Lexus would not help out at all. Had rebuilt transmission put in now, my wife on the way home from work was on the side of the road with the transmission out again at 136,000miles. Having towed in today to see if it will cost another $4,000.00 to fix.
I will never purchase a Lexus again. With as many people having this problem, Lexus needs to stand up and help us out. Do not buy a RX300 unless you like to work on transmissions.
I own a Lexus RX300 with 88,000 miles and also experienced a lunging and then failure of my transmission. I must have had a slow leak or something because my transmission fluid was pretty much empty. Based on what I am finding, there are quite a few other situations the same as mine. I also got suckered into thinking this vehicle would be at least the same quality or better than my 1994 Toyota Landcruiser which I drove for 12 years and handed down to my 18 year old daughter. It has 180,000 miles and never a serious problem.
In any case, unless the dealer steps up which I am sure they won't, this will be my last Lexus.
I own a 2000 Lexus RX 300 and the transmission completely seized up on me today with 101,000 miles. It surged a little bit and then when I parked it I could not put it in reverse. The two trruck operator could not unseize the drive train- had to physically drag it up on the flat bed. I kept the car well maintained. $3400 to get it replaced. I bought it used with 25,000 miles.
Own a 2000 RX 300 AWD with 97k miles. Transmission is no bad and repair is estimated at $3000. Repair shop says may be $5000. I am debating if repair is worth it or just sell it as is. Disappointing considering the hype around "Lexus" as a drive forever car.
I am disappointed, as many others are, to see the problem with the 2000 RX300 transmission failure. I experienced the same problem yesterday.
I purchased my car new, in 2001. I have done all of the regular maintenance, without fail, and have loved driving my car. Yesterday; however, without much warning, the transmission went out. It was fine and then the "check engine" light came on and the car began to "miss out" or experience transmission slipping. I pulled off the road and waited a while, then tried to make it back home. I was 50 miles from home. Not a chance, within 10 - 15 minutes, it would not move and I was stranded on the side of a busy highway, calling roadside assistance.
I have never had any major issues with this car and it has 121k miles. I will have it repaired and continue to drive it.
Nonetheless, it is very disheartening to hear that this is not an isolated situation.
