2004 Mazda 3 sedan 1.6 benzin from Slovakia

Summary:

Excellent design and good handling

Faults:

Nothing yet.

General Comments:

Sporty design +++

Handling and grip is great at dry surfaces (16" 205/55)

Traction stabilization +++

Not as powerful engine as I would like to be.

Some parts in interior looks cheap (top of gear box lever-leather+plastic) (door handles-plastic) (handbrake end is made of plastic) (chrome would be nice)

2004 Mazda 3 S desan 2.3 4-cylinder from North America

Summary:

Great car; unlike other in its class

Faults:

A riddle inside the front driver and passenger doors and they still cannot find the problem. Maintenance cost is higher than Honda. Goodyear Eagle RS-A is really awful and cause my front wheels to slip a lot in wet condition.

General Comments:

The car has a great handling, very nice and modern interior. CD player is great. Steering is precise and all the convenient features you need are in this car.

2004 Mazda 3 S 5-door 2.3 liter 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

The best overall sport compact on the US market, no doubt!

Faults:

The driver side mirror vibrates from wind at speed, but the mechanic says it's normal. It doesn't bother me too much.

The driver's side fog lamp lens was shattered by what I assume was a rock on the road, but I don't remember anything hitting the car. $200+ to replace.

General Comments:

I have enjoyed this car very much thus far. It handles exceptionally well and has good power, but it could use a little more.

The steering is quick and responsive and the shifter feels very good. The brakes tend to change their feel from solid to a little soft while driving. Having 17 inch wheels standard on the 5 door is very nice and they add to the handling abilities, but the ride remains comfortable. Overall, the car feels very solid and rigid.

The interior is very nice. The red and blue lighting is gorgeous as well as the red/black seats. The rounded electro-luminescent guages remind one of something from a Porsche boxter. Overall, the interior quality is far above what one would expect from a car in its class.

The stereo sounds good, but it could be better. The fact that it's part of the dash limits aftermarket modification. The steering wheel controls for the radio are a nice touch.

It has so much room! But yet it doesn't look or feel like a full size wagon in any way. Rear cargo area versatility is wonderful!

The exterior of the car is different from everything else on the road, so it does get noticed. The clear lens taillights are very nice, and the projector headlights light up the road well, but the fog lamps don't really do anything noticeable. If you need bright fog lamps I'd recommend adding aftermarket ones with stronger output.

All in all, this car is a joy to drive and to look at. I highly recommend it!

I just had to ask this. Was your 2004 Volkswagen Beetle a lemon? My previous experience with Volkswagens was a nightmare. Let me know your Volkswagen horror stories! Thanks!

Regarding your comment, for VW nightmare stories, see my review of my 99 Beetle, 'Automotive Nightmare from First to Last'.

2004 Mazda 3 1.6 from Israel

Summary:

Buy it for the looks, but the Corolla and Civic are better

Faults:

Dashboard vibration at low revs since it was new. Two friends have the same model with the same noise. Mazda fixed it with sponge.

General Comments:

The 1.6 engine is underpowered, acceleration is poor for the class and less than the official engine power suggests.

Automatic gearbox with semi automatic mode is great, one of the main reasons I bought it.

Nice interior, but looks and feels cheap in places.

Handling is better than expected, Ford Focus like in general feel, but more precise. Fairly neutral when pressed.

The air conditioner is poor.

I am currently in the market for a new car and have test-driven the Mazda 3 on several occasions. I too have found the interior to be a bit 'cheap' and feel that the steering is a bit too sensitive. Although the car looks good, I am afraid it's a bit of a case of 'bells and whistles' for the Mazda 3, although the models in the lower range are probably value for money.
