1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 180 Classic 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent car, but lacks the character of my old 190E

Faults:

Very little has gone wrong with this car.

There is a fault in the fuse box which meant that the indicators would occasionally not work - but I fixed this with some cleaning of the contacts!

I replaced the front and rear disks and pads within the last 10000 miles and now it stops like nothing else!

General Comments:

This is such a quiet car - when travelling along a country lane at 40mph with the window open you will hear the tyres rather than the engine!

Its not a sports car, but the torque is great - it is best at around 4k rpm - 90mph in 5th.

It could do with more legroom in the back - but as the driver, it's not my problem!

The model has very few toys, but then what it has works very well - you get what you pay for.

My mother has a 1995 C180(Elegance). The exhaust system has broken and the gearbox has just about broken, and there is a funny noise with the fans at the front when it changes gears; it's an Auto.

Also it gets very hot after a drive; the radiator is fine.

The wiper jammed up and the radio has broken.

There is also not a lot of power when taking off.

1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Classic C180 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Class leader

Faults:

Other than the Alarm failing in 96, nothing.

General Comments:

Reliability has been excellent although the car is serviced regarly by main dealer.

Slightly underpowered, but drives extremely smoothly and returns over 35mpg.

Although this is the base 'classic' and the interior has the no thrills trim, it's still put together well and has no rattles.

Reluctantly just traded it in for a new shape '01 C220cdi with I can only hope is as good!

1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 200 Diesel Classic 2.0 diesel from Austria

Summary:

Absolutely disappointing for that high price

Faults:

Battery broke down after 1000 km.

Rust in the trunk, rust at the body, alongside the wheels.

Temperature gauge got stuck at 20.000 km.

Exhaust pipe broke at 70.000 km, was replaced by a new one due to a recall.

Accelerator pedal gets stuck at full power (only at low temperatures).

Back brake discs & pads had to be replaced 2 times.

Track rods had to be replaced at 40.000 km.

Steel-Wheels (used during the winter-months) are rusting excessively.

Rattling in the dash and at the roof.

Engine gets hot at mountain-roads.

Engine leaks oil (started at 50.000km).

The hood-closing-system was replaced due to a recall.

General Comments:

Acceleration of the car is very poor (only 75 horsepowers combined with a heavy weighting body).

No power windows, no standard sunroof, no air-condition, back-seats can't be folded, "classic" trim is fitted very poor.

Engine is very loud, especially at high speeds.

Passenger cabin is too small in the back.

Only one single windscreen-wiper which doesn't clean but smear!

For your wiper problem try using a new wiper blade. I'm pretty sure the wiper will work better.

If your battery broke down after 1000 km, maybe it's your fault, leaving any lights on. In this case it has nothing to do with the km.

Back brake discs & pads may be broken because of the hard terrain you may be driving in.

... etc etc.

I have a C200 Elegance engine that is quiet, it doesn't get hot and don't leak oil, even if it has 220.000 km. If you check other comments on this car, you would understand what I am talking about.
