2000 Mercury Cougar LX from North America

Faults:

Alternator - (twice!).

Starter.

Fuel pump.

Broken trunk struts (or whatever they're called, in hatchbacks).

General Comments:

The car hasn't been driven much. I am the original owner, and had it ordered for me (not chosen off the lot, in other words).

It hasn't given me a whole lot of trouble before, but I have been home bound, and really haven't driven it much during these cold winter months.

I've had to buy two batteries for it (luckily, one was still warrantied), and now it's dead again, so I think this time it's the alternator AGAIN! Goodness gracious!

Sexy

Faults:

Nothing, this car is great except the mileage meter went out.

Pretty quick and handles great. The all leather interior is just sexy.

2000 Mercury Cougar 2.5L Duratec from North America

Summary:

Sweet, easily customizable machine

Faults:

Purchased car used in 2004 with 43,000kms, replaced the alternator within 3 months, replaced the alternator again within 6 months, and that alternator lasted until summer 2010.

Minor suspension issue in 2006, steering rod replaced, but believe the issue resulted from a side collision in winter of 2005.

Summer 2010, had to replace control arms, the car was wobbly on the highway, scary to drive when it was raining, but runs great now.

Trunk latch only opens with the key remote, but that's not a big deal.

Front vent popping up is annoying, but repairable with two-way adhesive tape applied to both edges; won't pop up unless the setting is on high.

General Comments:

Bought the car initially because of its sporty looks and sexy stance. Handling is great, and the body kit and headlight and taillight covers change the look dramatically. A real attention getter, and despite the earlier issues, still a beautiful little machine that beats all new models in style and performance, hands down.

Not such a great car to drive in winter, but purchased a 96 Neon to use for the snowy season, so no longer an issue.

All in all, love my Cougar, and would not trade her for anything or sell her for any amount of money.

2000 Mercury Cougar 2.5 from North America

Summary:

Unreliable

Faults:

Just to help some people out with this issue, power surge, sunroof not working, and coolant light on.

General Comments:

To further assist with this problem, replaced the alternator on it and installed a new battery, after that the car started to have power surges, with flickering of the interior as well as the headlights. To help with that, do not go dumping money on another alternator, or installing a new PCM, check the battery cables, and mainly check the body ground, that is the negative cable, that should help your issue with the flickering. And that is really a cheap fix I think.

As far as the sunroof goes, where the interior dome light indicators are, simply remove that, that is where your motor is and you can manually turn it to close it, and as far as the coolant light goes, top off the coolant just above the max, and you should be OK.

My Cougar was doing the exact same thing, and finally left me stranded at the store. Had to pull her home. Everyone thinks it is the starter, but I am sure it is the ground cable. Other than that, I love my Cougar, and wouldn't trade her for the world!

2000 Mercury Cougar from North America

Summary:

I love my Cougar!

Faults:

I got this car when it had 150,000 miles on it. I have not had any problems with it.

I have had this car for a year now. Just every few months, you will need an oil change and a tune up, and that's it.

I am still driving my 2000 Mercury Cougar V6, and still no problems. Now the mileage is 168,000.

General Comments:

My Mercury Cougar is a very attractive, stylish car. It runs smooth and the A/C is ice cold.

All my friends love my car, because it is really fast. Every time I show up to a place, people always look at my car and give me compliments.

I am a soccer girl, and the car is just a perfect match with me, because we are both sporty.

So the people who have problems with it, well you just don't know how to take care of your car. The system in the car is great also.

I completely agree, only had to change the alternator once and it's great, people always look at my Cougar and complement me on it. Some think it's a Jaguar, and then they see it's a Mercury, and they're like wow, I love it!!
