1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 5.0 litre from North America

Summary:

Nice ride, roomy, reliable, and good in an accident.

Faults:

Oil pan has rusted through.

Both front power window motors quit working at about 190000 km.

Both front door locks quit working.

General Comments:

This is a big luxury car and as such it still gets decent mileage on the highway. I live in northern Canada and the roads are not the best, yet it still rides quiet and smooth. Incidentally, I was recently rear-ended by a Chev Lumina which fit between the quarter panels. I sustained approx. $2000.00 in damages and the insurance co. is repairing it. For it's comfort level and how it takes a hit, I would recommend this model to anyone.

1991 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 5.0 from North America

Summary:

There is no better car available on the road dollar for dollar

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

This is one outstanding car for the money. It is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned. It is remarkably fuel efficient for such a large vehicle. The styling is beautiful and classic. Very convenient for a family car, with a exceptionally large trunk. Great power, great brakes, mine even has a limited slip differential. At thirteen years old, it is in better condition corrosion wise than my 2000 Chevy Silverado. I have nothing negative to share about this vehicle, and would strongly advise anyone who is considering buying a low mileage example of this model to do so.

I have been driving Grand Marquis' for the last 10 years. My first one was a neglected 86 model. I paid 500 cad for it and it served me well for 3 years until I totaled it crashing into a pickup truck that illegally cut me off. I replaced it with an 89 colony park, which has proven to be the best vehicle ever. I still drive it. I recently acquired a 90 gm gs from an elderly gentleman with only 37,000 miles on it. There are some typical clear coat paint problem with it, but is otherwise in superior condition. Bang for the buck, these cars are exceptionally reliable and confortable vehicles.

Does that car have 25000 actual miles or did the 5 digit odometer roll over.

1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 5.0 V8 from North America

Summary:

A frugal, comfortable, reliable way to travel anywhere

Faults:

Transmission was rebuilt at 175,000 miles (cable that connects to throttle came loose, destroyed transmission).

Air Conditioning retrofitted to R-134A.

Driver's door window works poorly.

General Comments:

This car is very comfortable, it will handle four adults & their luggage on a cross-country trip (>1000 miles) with no problem. Outside of the problems listed, it has been a trouble-free machine, which is amazing considering the age and mileage of the car. Uses virtually no oil. Both the interior and exterior have worn relatively little; the car looks better than many with half its mileage. Considering the age of the car, there seem to be a large amount of them still on the road, so this car really is not a unique case. For someone who has to commute long distances, it is perfect. The seats could have been pulled from a living room, soft and thick. Since it is an older design, parts are cheap and easy to find, and if something does go wrong, any mechanic can fix it. Fuel mileage not too bad (approx. 20mpg on highway). Acceleration not the greatest, but will attain illegal speeds while loaded with no problem.

I had to rebuild the transmission in my 91 too. They were manufactured with plastic TV washers which break frequently. It is a good idea to have the plastic ones replaced with brass ones before they break. Mine cost $1058.00. to rebuild. I hit 39k in my Merc while traveling to Tulsa yesterday. It had belonged to my Mom before she passed. It was literally only driven to the grocery store on Sundays for years by a sweet little gray haired lady. It's like new today and it is one of my prized possessions. I've replaced the alternator and battery. No problems with anything else.
