1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 non turbo from North America

Faults:

When I first got it (for $800), it was smoking a lot when I got home. There was a coolant leak right onto the headers that developed. I replaced the pipe it was leaking from.

I bought this from the original owner. The tranny and clutch have 80,000 on them. He replaced a lot of things, and I have receipts for all of them. I wouldn't have bought it without them.

The car has 320,000 miles and has no problems; starts right up, and everything works.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS Spyder 4 cylinder non-turbo from North America

Summary:

Very fun, but not super reliable

Faults:

Clutch needed to be replaced at 105000 miles.

Issues with engine sputter, trans slipping.

Seats are stained from leakage at front bars.

Rear window motors seem to break on every single Spyder from this era I have seen.

General Comments:

This car is more fun to drive than any other car I've owned; the reliability and workmanship seem to be way worse however.

I bought it with high miles for nearly nothing, less than 4000 in great physical shape, but needed to change out the clutch, have some wires and spark plugs replaced. For about 1500 worth of work, it seems to run fine now.

Seems testy, like it would be easy to mess up the manual on this car, gotta drive it carefully, but it is so fun to maneuver, and the top down fun more than makes up for the reliability issues.

Definitely a cool car to have around, but if you can't fix things yourself on the go, I wouldn't recommend road trips.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 DOHC from North America

Summary:

Best car I have owned yet

Faults:

At this high mileage, all I have had to replace is a belt ($80).

General Comments:

Always turns heads, every kid on the street wants to race me.

The cars runs amazing; I bet it will make it to 200k miles, and I BEAT on it.

The interior feels like it's still a brand new car.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 nonturbo from North America

Summary:

Love it.

Faults:

Engine sputtering at 150,000 miles.

Door 'catches' for lock and handle came loose. Couldn't unlock or open the passenger door from outside.

Passenger side door handle broke off. However, thanks to eBay, the replacement handles were 14.99 and I removed the interior panel and replaced it myself easily.

Truck will not open using interior pull. Spring has been reset and came loose a day later.

Front fender catches on concrete parking space 'bumpers'. Have torn off both front sides of the fender before parking in two spaces sideways.

General Comments:

Wonderful car.

No problems until hit 150,000 miles. Had to replace brakes, rotors and calipers.

Very roomy in the front.

Backseat perfect size for my baby. Don't like grown passengers anyway.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder from North America

Summary:

Good looking. Some poor designs

Faults:

My Eclipse also has a window rattle when it is down. I took the door panel off and cannot find anything loose. It appears to be simply a poor design. I have found if I put the window slightly up (so that the weather strip grabs it, that it does not rattle nearly as bad. My roof leaks in the front corners only. My rear window has developed a leak. A shop temporarily fixed it with caulking.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS Spyder from North America

Summary:

I would not recommend this car

Faults:

I own a 1999 Spyder. The convertible top leaks during strong storms. Soon after I bought it, the driver side door handle broke off. The trunk is very hard to lift up and after replacing the antennae, it still will not go down. The paint is coming off. It started on the trunk and has moved toward the front. Now the power windows fail to go up. The steering wheel shakes when the car is at a red light.

General Comments:

The overall look of this car is gorgeous. I haven't had any motor problems. It is great for two people.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder from North America

Summary:

Fine car if you want to be wet and never roll down the top

Faults:

It's a decent car as engines go, but you have to not mind being wet. All the time.

And, once that happens, the window controls cease to work, and the antenna stops working, and the windows will get stuck, and won't roll up correctly, and then you can't roll down the top anymore because the windows won't come back up again.

Basically, in terms of cosmetics, not worth your time.
