1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS 2.0 gasoline from Mexico

Summary:

A sheep in wolf's clothing

Faults:

So far no problems at all, this car is a pleasure to own mechanically.

General Comments:

Performance is really poor for this car. However ride comfort is good. Best advice is wait about a year or so and buy the Evolution Lancer, that's a serious performance car.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 204 from North America

Summary:

Good bang for the buck

Faults:

Alternator failed requiring me to have the car towed, since the top was down I had no way to put it up.

General Comments:

The car handles well and is a real head turner.

I do have a small leak around the passenger side window, but no major leaks.

The car is smooth on the highway and I am planning an extended trip very soon.

How bad is the leak?

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.4L 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

This car is too expensive to maintain

Faults:

I bought my car used, and as soon as my warranty was up...

I had to replace my front brakes.

I noticed my muffler had a hole in it... after it fell off.

I've had a lot of trouble with my quick-shift (after-factory) that was on the car when I bought it.

I not only need to recharge my air-conditioner, but also get a new condenser.

My middle euro-tail light fills with water despite several attempts to fix it.

I need to replace both the rotors in my front tires and under my pedal.

I do have to say that my car does get great gas mileage.

General Comments:

Overall, I would really like my car if it didn't cost so much money to maintain. Being a '99 it should not have this many problems (some of which are obviously due to the past owner). I did buy my car used from a Mitsubishi dealer, but the car was not safe. It has a lot of problems (that miraculously appeared soon after my warranty was up) that should have been fixed before it was ever sold. The only way that I would ever buy another Mitsubishi car, is if it was new with an extended warranty.

I agree that this car is a bit pricey to maintain. I wouldn't mind spending the extra cash to maintain it if it were faster, though. Not only does the acceleration pose as...well...horrible. But my quarter mile time was a pathetic 18.5 seconds! The gears are too long, the top end speed is low, and the horsepower is minor. On the other hand, it has been a very reliable car. I haven't had any exhaust problems mostly based on the fact that I have an aftermarket exhaust installed. The sunroof does tend to leak and the side windows do also, but all-in-all this car has treated me well. If only it were faster, I wouldn't complain about it so much.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T 2.4 turbo from North America

Summary:

An extremely classy-sporty car for the guys who need some speed!

Faults:

The E-Brake light stays on most of the time and the brakes are brand new.

The roof leaks - not terribly like everyone else's YET.

The seats don't tilt back very far at all. I have short legs so I need to be closer for the clutch, and since I can't fold the seat back a little more, I look a little paranoid with my chin almost touching the steering wheel.

General Comments:

I've had this car three weeks, and so far I've had minor problems.

At 20,000 miles, this car really shouldn't have ANY problems yet...

It does handle very well. You can make a sharp turn going pretty fast without even braking and you'll stay right on point.

Sound system is great for factory, it's extremely loud.

When the turbo kicks in, you're really flying! But sometimes it feels like the turbo is a little lazy, meaning it takes just an extra second more to kick in than expected.

1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS from North America

Summary:

A decent bargain for the single life

Faults:

The biggest problem I have had with this car is the brakes. I have had them replaced and replaced and replaced just to have them squeak and squeal shortly thereafter. My mechanic has even done some of the brake changes for free as he doesn't understand the problem and has also tried different composites -- however, we are back with the original type pads. Besides that...

- clutch replaced at 58,000 miles (which is early-normal).

- reverse has ALWAYS been a problem to find.

- roof leaks, even after tightening the clasp and seals.

- antenna jammed and will not retract, although motor can still be heard spinning.

- driver-side door console broke and fell inside the panel requiring a service visit.

- sun visors do not last long and are now merely covered in pieces of ripped fabric.

- all of the black exterior pieces are faded (both plastic and metal).

General Comments:

I have never had the "burning oil syndrome" I hear so much about, but I am meticulous with periodic oil changes.

I truly enjoy having a sporty convertible, especially with a rear GLASS window instead of the plastic used in many other models. Surprisingly, the car is very quiet when the top and windows are up.

Having a small engine is a bargain on gas, comparatively speaking.

Comfortable enough for long trips - but watch out for seat-belt tan marks!!

My biggest complaint with design is the virtual lack of space. Thank goodness I can put the top down or I would never get anything in the back seat.
