1990 Nissan 240SX Hatchback 2.4 Gas from North America

Summary:

Low power fun rear wheel sports car

Faults:

All of these problems occurred within the first 3000kms of my owning this car, SEVERAL things have gone wrong at only just over 100,000km on the odometer.

Clutch Fan seized, new fan - $240.

Starter died - $250.

Faulty starter died again within 2 days.

Alternator - $375.

Car was bought from a used car dealership with a very worn and slipping clutch, so I paid to have a new clutch installed before delivery of the car.

"New" clutch blew after 3 weeks of my owning the car.

Seats were badly worn, so they were replaced before I picked up the car.

Rocker cover gasket now leaking oil all over the engine, soon to be replaced.

General Comments:

I do not think these engines are very reliable, but I plan to put an SR20DET in this car over the upcoming winter.

There are a couple of very impressive qualities about the 240SX though, handling and braking. With a stock suspension and almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution on the car, it corners wonderfully. This is the only reason I plan to upgrade the one major flaw with the car, low power, unreliable motor.

I have to say that I do not agree at all with that review. For one I own a 1989 Nissan 240sx and this car has 172000 miles on it and amazingly I have had to do nothing to the engine. Yeah it has an oil leak, but that is expected, along with a lot of other things that are expected to be damaged with a car with this many miles. Yet still nothing has gone wrong with my car.

1990 Nissan 240SX SE Fastback 2.4L SOHC from North America

Summary:

The last true affordable sports car

Faults:

First bought: replaced tires, brake pads and rotors.

Fuel pump replaced @ 145000 miles

Changed plastic timing chain guides to metal ones @ 148000 miles. Not needed, but did as precaution due to a bulletin out.

2nd set of tires @ 185000.

General Comments:

Got the car when the era of affordable sports cars died. Now all so called affordable sports cars are front wheelers except Miata (which is too small for me). True RWD sports cars are now too expensive to either buy or maintain.

That is the main attraction of the North American 240sx for a budget minded student like me. A reliable, easy to maintain sports car. Maybe not the most powerful or best performance, but definitely fun to drive and easy to maintain. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore.

Leather is starting to rip.

General Comments:

The car has a very good torque to weight ratio, giving it good power.

Handling is decent.

Stock speakers need to be larger.

Love the "slam dash" look.

Nice deeper sound coming from a 4 cylinder, mainly from the after market exhaust.

Summary:

Well worth every dollar

Faults:

Transmission failed while driving on the road.

Rotors needed to be replaced.

General Comments:

For a car that is 11 years old, it drives and handles extremely well. A year or two from now, I'm putting high performance parts inside of her.

Love the way it drives, rear wheel, no problem in the winter with snows, not quite enough power but great handling.

Love the interior design, they are designing interiors for 2002, 13 years later, that don't look as good. Love the bright instrument panel lighting.

Not so reliable.
