Just got phone call from dealership regarding my 04 Maxima. After running the initial diagnostic ($105), they got back a code p0340, which is for the camshaft position sensor (there are 2, code p0345 is for the other one). They claim it had oil on it, and that it needed to be replaced before trying to identify the shifting problem ($360).

After speaking to the rep who sold me the car, he mentioned the goodwill claim through Nissan, but have not heard any response so far. I believe it would have more weight coming from the customer rather than the dealership. Service department called after replacing the sensor, and are now telling me my mounts need to be replaced also, ($1000). There are 4 of them (front, rear, side and trans. I'm assuming it is the trans. I am willing to pay only for the diagnostic, and not for any other work or part. I too love my Maxima, but with all these problems, it is leaving a very bad taste in my mouth.

Beside this site, I also recommend Nissanhelp.com for straight info from actual Nissan techs and EverythingNissan.com for prices on parts.

If you have any info on claims or such, please email me at edmdz1@optonline.net

I am shocked about the many complaints about this kind of issue. My car struggles a lot to switch from 1st to 2nd. The sensor and spark plugs - was advised by the dealer that it would resolve the issue. The car is STILL doing the same thing after giving them $715. WTF!!! I can't believe that they are acting at the dealership that there is not a known issue, because I am not laying down easy after seeing this many complaints about this issue. I worked up to get this car that has not cost me more than what it is worth. I really do not know why a reputable company such as Nissan would do such a thing - not own up to it and resolve this issue.

I have a 06 SE that I had to replace the front brakes at 20k and the back brakes at 30. I also hear a loud grinding/scraping noise in my front end. My mechanic told me that I need new bearing for the hub. My last car was a Honda Accord and I gave it back with 55k and I never replaced my brakes. Never had a problem!!! My next car will be a Honda!!

Good evening everyone.

I was surfing the Internet for information on a "transmission flush" for my 2004 Nissan Maxima SE and encountered this site. I was surprised to see that so many people are experiencing the same issue. My car has just reached its 77k miles and I noticed the jerking from 1st to second gear. I was advised as so many of you were to try the transmission flush, but after reading your comments, I'm not sure that it will work.

I see there is a lot of talk of class action lawsuits and complaints, but has anyone actually filed one? I found a website for class action lawsuits:

http://www.topclassactions.com/complaint-form

If anyone out there has filed one or knows of a place where anyone can join/petition this obvious avoidance of resolution, please email me at exit4_nj@yahoo.com!

3rd update, just heard back from Consumer Affairs after filing my complaint and getting good feed back from the Service Mgr at our local dealership. Not good news. Nissan will do nothing! Because our Maxima has 67k miles on it they only said it is past the warranty and they were very sorry. I even told them about this site and explained to them again all the uphappy customers. They really didn't seem to care. I ended the call telling them they had lost a very loyal customer, again they didn't seem to care. We are now in the process of trading the car in.

I also fall in the same complaint category on the 04 SE Maxima with the rattle noise and trans slipping. The reason I got it was because I also own a 1996 with 140,000 miles, and it still drives like a dream. After reading all your comments, something has to be done, and Monday I will place a complaint to Nissan. OLEON18382@AOL.COM

I am as well in this group. Purchased off the lot a 2005 Maxima SE. Vehicle has 61K miles and just started jerking from 1st to 2nd gear. In the dealership as I post this, but I am ready for action. This is crazy.

Hello everyone. I too am an unsatisfied Maxima owner in Canada. Bought my 04 brand new.

Right off the start had a steering vibration at highway speeds. Balanced tires numerous times, dealer was unable to diagnose, still there at 130,000 kms. Have replaced tires 3 times to no avail. First set was reimbursed by Goodyear for sidewall cracking.

Had a skyview window replaced due to recall. Dealer subbed out the work to a local glass shop. During the removal process they chipped the paint under the gasket. Rust set in and cost me $1500 to have the rust repaired. Of course Nissan claimed they were not responsible and would not go after the third party.

Have the same problems with tranny, will have this checked by the dealer, more to get it on their work order as I don't think they have any idea what is causing the problem.

Currently am having a clunking noise from the front end when driving slow over uneven surfaces (parking lots are the worst). Have had the struts replaced ($750), sway bar replaced (warranty) but have not cured the problem.

Regarding the problem with brake shimmy, the dealer told me that it was rotor warping and would have to have them replaced, but once I replaced the goodyear tires this went away.

Very disappointed to hear that these are common problems. Nissan used to stand for quality, but this has put a blemish on their record. They need to step up and take responsibility for these problems.

I just got off the phone with the NHTSA and NISSAN. The guy at the NHTSA told me that they will look for a pattern and see if there are other NISSAN'S with the same problems; that way they can make NISSAN do a recall. The best thing for everyone to do right now is call the NHTSA and give them your complaints. That is what the gentleman told me. The # is 888-327-4236. It will only take 10-15 minutes of your time. If they get enough complaints NISSAN will have to do a recall and fix this problem. Please just give the NHTSA a call, its time for NISSAN to take care of their responsibilities. Don't waste your time with the dealers. All they're going to do is tell you they can't find a problem or that it will cost you thousands of dollars to fix it... Or like always, they'll tell you there's another problem with your car and you have to pay so and so amount of money to fix it. At least that's how they do in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn...

I recently bought an 04 Nissan Maxima used from a dealership.. it ran very well and I was very pleased.. for a while.. and after I saw this site I was vexed by the amount of problems everyone has had..

I paid 9000 cash for my car from my savings I had worked very hard for.. that's all I had.. all of my money.. I can't tell you how scared I was at the purchase I had made..

ALWAYS DO YOUR RESEARCH.. It doesn't matter what you have heard about how good a car is.. it took me reading these comments to figure out that if you want a Nissan Maxima, you should buy one made before 2002.. I have no doubt in my mind that the owner was probably going thru the same issues everyone else is having, and traded the car in for a later model.. It was then that the dealership took the car and probably gave it a trans flush to temporarily fix it.. selling it to the next sucker to come along.. me..

Today I pulled it all out of my ass and actually traded it straight up for a 2004 V6 Honda Accord.. black.. loaded with leather and everything..

GOD IS GOOD.. In your face Nissan.. I will continue to slam that car company until the day I no longer breath.. and no one in my family will EVER buy any Nissan ever again.. not my friends.. and damn sure not my wife or my child.. and I don't even have kids yet..

Thank you for making this forum and telling everyone how crappy these cars really are.. That's all we can do as consumers.. The rich run this country and it's going down the toilet really fast.. you guys have done me a great service and I thank you.
