I am another victim of 2004 nissan maxima trasmission problem. The car have a poor quality trasmission I guess. I think we should complain to Nissan and let them agree a recall. My email:haibin.gao@hotmail.com.
Please file a complaint on-line at WWW.NHTSA.GOV about this 2004 Maxima transmission problem. It only takes a few minutes but without it, the Government will not look into it and nothing will be solved. Clearly a new transmission has to be designed and a mass re-call has to take place. Lots of luck. Japanese car companies are not known for fixing their mistakes.
Unbelievable!! My 04 Maxima currently has just over 50,000 miles on it. I have noticed some hard shifts over the past few months, but they had been very intermittent.
The other day however I noticed the service engine soon light was on, and when accelerating from a stop I realized that I barely had any power! A buddy of mine has a shop and he had the code pulled and reset. P 0797 Pressure control solenoid, stuck on. I have also had to replace the battery.
The front right rotor is warped and causes steering wheel shim when downhill braking.
My car had begun to idle very low twice and actually died once.
A weld on the heat shield of the catalytic converter has come loose and causes a noticeable vibration when accelerating when cold. This subsides once it's heated up, probably due to metal expansion.
I have also replaced the tires due to bad alignment camber on some, and also castor. I believe it was wearing the tires unevenly. I went with Kumho's instead.
I will be putting my complaint into the NHTSA website. Hopefully I can either trade this car in for an 09, sell it, or at least get that transmission problem fixed at no cost to me. Hopefully there will be a recall because I otherwise like the car... although that 09 is nice! From what I've read, it sounds like it has a different transmission.
04 Maxima owner, car has 45,000 miles to date. I have had the following serviced under warranty and extended warranty to date (I have been lucky enough not to pay for anything yet -- I am so glad I sprung for the extended warranty) :
* 6-8 front struts the first one 6 months after purchasing the car brand new (the strut goes within one week of being replaced, had one strut that lasted 6 months -- within 1 month had 3 struts installed -- all on my time and leaving my vehicle for a full day)
* New transmission with less than 30,000 miles
* Timing belt replaced within the last 6 months
* Numerous minor problems
* Have complained about my rear speaker, but have been told it is fine.
Can't wait to get rid of the car. Funny thing is every time I bring the car in I am told I am the only one with these problems. They do not have a repair history on any of this! Guess that is a big lie!
I had my transmission replaced under the warranty at 54,000, but the hard shifting is still there.
Brought it back to the dealer, drove the car along with the mechanic and Nissan engineer, but they will not do anything else.
I still own a 1996 Maxima that I gave to my son, and at 140,000 it drives better then my 2004. If I knew how bad this 04 was, I would have gotten a Camry instead..
This 04 Maxima is noisy, I can feel every bump on the road, and the previous owner I found out traded for a Mercedes because he was tired of all the work he had done on it under 50,000 miles.
I have always been a Maxima lover, but this car is a big disappointment and I will trade it in.
I filed a complaint on line last week AT WWW.NHTSA.GOV and I hope more of you 2004 Maxima owners do too. If your transmission is not slipping right now, sooner or later it will.
My 2004 Nissan Maxima's transmission failed at 68,000 miles. No engine lights or prior warnings, just failed suddenly and conveniently after the 60,000 mile warranty expired.
Even a Hyundai has a 100k warranty, so what's up with Nissan ruining its reputation by not voluntarily taking care of an obvious recall issue.
Filed a complaint with the NHSTA and wrote to the manufacturer via their website as well. Hope to see some positive action from the manufacturer to correct this issue instead of it squandering away the goodwill built from the 2-3 decades of reliable cars they produced.
I bought a brand-new 2004 Maxima in April 2003! It has been one issue with this vehicle after another, including shoddy workmanship!
You have to remember that '04 was the 1st year Maxima was made in the US!
My CD player is stuck (will play-not eject), the upper door handles came out when someone was holding on them, my key-less opener part failed which is almost $200, the alternator went at 19,000 miles, pile is missing from the carpet. Was hidden on side of the seat (They had to know) Rotors had to be turned. Though they increased size of brakes and wheels, they increased weight. Any fast stops will warp your rotor's, and my clutch (6 speed-$1,700 to fix) just went. I have 36K on the car! It also had a major recall! I have had 5 Maxima's, and the '04 is a real lemon, though my '02 had the same warping issue with the rotors (twice)!
I have been having the same transmission problems with my Nissan Maxima 2004. This is terrible. I tried to get help from the Nissan Corp. and nothing was resolved. I had to pay for a rebuilt transmission and I am still having problems. I will definitely file a complaint with NHTSA. Idaisluv@aol.com.
As many as you, I have the same transmission problem. Now the car has 133k miles. I bought it used with 52k.
When I first noticed the problem, I took it the dealership. They did a flush, the problem persisted, took it back and they "never replicated the issue".
Timing chain is making a noise; no doubt it will snap.
The tire issue is ridiculous.
I thought I was the only one with the CD player issue; sound goes away on one side.
A REAL LEMON incredibly. Filing a complaint with the NHTSA.
Any updates on fixes or anything?
Just went on the NHTSA and found 158 (2004 Maxima) transmission complaints and no recall, however the sunroof with just a few has a recall.
About 30 minutes ago, my wife came to me and said "the Maxima is shifting so hard and it's really slow... and it died" so I got in it... came inside and googled and to my unbelievable surprise... I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE! I'm having the EXACT problem everyone else is. Stays in 5th no matter what, and it really bangs the tranny from R to D and D to R. man... this sucks.
Has anyone researched the battery ground to the transmission as a cause? It doesn't sound like we could be that lucky, but, I know these electronics are completely dumb...
I'm going to fill out a complaint, along with everyone else, but I don't see any help coming from Pissan... I mean Nissan.
