1988 Nissan Sentra SGS 1.6 petrol four from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Not worth the trouble

Faults:

Seats were already quite worn when I first bought the car, but it got worse as the days went by.

Radiator started leaking at 166000 kms, so was overheating, and then caused the next problem, which was the head gasket blew just 2000 kms later.

Around 170000kms, the car would be hard to start when warm, and after 3 goes, the car would flood.

When cold, the choke would have a mind of its own, so would have to use the accelerator to warm it up.

General Comments:

The seats wore quite quickly, and the dashboard faded in parts, so you could tell the different plastics.

The car was good on trips into town, but felt underpowered compared to my previous 1.6 Corolla.

Overall, I dreaded owning my Sentra, and would not consider buying another vehicle from this manufacturer.

1988 Nissan Sentra ZXE 1.6 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Awesome for a 20 year old car

Faults:

Have only had one problem that I can remember and that was the clutch wearing out. Other than that, and general maintenance, there is nothing bad I can say about this car.

General Comments:

This is a wonderful first car. I would probably use it until it breaks down if I didn't want a more powerful car.

I work as a pizza delivery expert and drive in excess of 100km a day. It's unbelievable how long this car is lasting and I must say I have a very large soft spot for it. It will be a shame to see it go, if it ever does.

I got one used in 1993. This car had only 1000 miles on it, it was bare bones, but that means less to go bad. No air, no power anything except for brakes, this had to be one of the best trouble free cars I had ever had, and a good thing as I did not make too much $ at the time to fix it.

I must say that this car and me had a good time together. I traded it when it had over 200k miles on it with only general repairs. Loved my 88 Sentra...

1988 Nissan Sentra E 1.6Litre, fuel injected from North America

Summary:

It's a GREAT car, EXCEPT for this one unbelievably up-setting problem

Faults:

Replace front right caliper at 41,000.

Replaced the rotors at about 40,000.

Had water in wheel well a few years ago. Needed new gasket, or something.

A few other fairly minor problems, except for one!!!

General Comments:

This car is basically a GREAT car, except for one problem. It races on warm-up, and has for the PAST 15 years! Because of this one problem, I have hated this car for all these years! The racing is somewhat intermittent, and is therefore extremely difficult to explain to a mechanic. I've asked many mechanics about the problem (including the local Nissan Dealer), and none of them have been able to help me. Most of them say that they can't find anything wrong with the car, even tho' I once left it at a shop for a week, in an effort to have them find the problem. It's actually got 43,400 miles on it, and it's in basically good condition. It's seldom been driven in winter.

Thank you.

1988 Nissan Sentra xe 1.6 Inline 4 TBI from North America

Summary:

Best bang for the buck

Faults:

Axle boots 85659.

Fuel/Temp gauge voltage regulator 94460.

Muffler 113434.

New distributer 147254.

New distributer (warranty) 185365.

Clutch, Axles 191825.

Starter 200379.

Oil pan gasket 209466.

Charged air conditioner 213700.

Engine 218552.

General Comments:

These cars are great if you want to get from point A to B.

They handle good since they are a very light car.

There is not much power, but because of this I get 34-38MPG. Over 40MPG on the highway going 55-60 MPH.

This was my Wife's car until we had children and got a minivan (1996). We decided to keep it as a third car.

I've never had to have this car towed, but have limped it home a few times.

Replaced the engine at 218552 miles. The head gasket blew and being a mechanic I figured I could get it home (wrong).

All other maintenance other than that listed has been routine.
