Right then there is a lot of arguin on here, but I have owned a few of the hot hatches and currently am on my 2nd 106 gti, mine is totally standard, and for the money, not much can beat it. also I will say people in clio 172s and 182s seem to think they are all f1 drivers. most of the time it depends on the driver, and there are a ridiculous amount of variables that affect 0-60 times, even as far as wind, tyre pressure, time taken to shift gears, amount of fuel, weather conditions etc. so why not just agree that your all driving quick cars and get on with it?
When I've bought my 1998 106 1.6 16V GTI he has on standard specs. I've done 7.8's with him several times BEFORE he's got the 2.5" exhaust system with the 4-2 down-pipe and the Pug Sport induction kit. After than with 147Bhp he made 7.1's even when I had woke him up.
Actually I had a race once, through 9 lights with a Type R, and when she reached me at the ninth where I was waiting for her for at least 3 seconds, the guy in the Civic has rolled down the window with a harmonic mixture of anger and disbelieve on his face and asked me what the '@uck' I'm driving.
For the Williams fans: I have two mates who have that legend and I keep up with them till 135mph and above that speed they slowly start to leave me behind, but only on the highway. Because on the course they keep up with me until the second curve and then they appear two smaller and smaller spots in my rear-view mirror before they gone. We've tried both situations many times.
But most importantly: After I sold him - oh God what have I done - I bought an Audi S6 2.2 Turbo with 520Bhp and manual six gear transmission, not stock of course. And I never ever, even for a moment felt those feelings with the Audi, what the GTI have given me while I drove him.
O.K. to roll with 180mph on the highway is a kind of feeling, but only for 2 minutes and after you starting to bore yourself to death.
So after 6 months I've sold it and bought a 2000 1.6 16V GTI. I took him to Cars Worx. They've supercharged him with 270Bhp and now I cannot imagine any other car that I want to drive better than mine. Now I've lied. Sometimes I have to ask my brother to change our cars for a few hours because I have to get some chicks. His Ferrari F430 is definitely better in that manner, but not in drive-ability next to a 270 BHP Pug 106 GTI, believe me!

According to Top Gear's test the 106 GTI is the second best handling car in the world pound per pound anyway.
What else do you guys need to believe?

It sounds lovely in this little world with ferrari's and super fast 106's...
Seriously when will a standard 106 gti ever touch a civic type R? Even to 60 it is noticably quicker, and after that the only way a 106 is going to go quickly is if somebody is towing it.
There is a reason these cars are so cheap. Say what you like about handling, there are far better cars out there, the exige and the integra type R both outhandle it, so stop pretending it's a wonder car. It only has 120 odd bhp to deal with-its no wonder it handles well.
The type r driver must have been asleep, as there is no way a pug 1.6 could beat it.
I have a standard 106 gti and am looking to add a ecosse forced air induction kit. does anyone own one of these that can tell me what kind of power gains I will get and whether it will sound much different. also, what sort of jump in insurance would you get if you informed ur insurance company bout this. just looking for a bit more power and more sporty noise. ecosse seems the best option. anyone know???

I own a 1998 reg 106 GTI. It is all bog standard.
I have just read about people saying a Clio 172 can beat GTI's. Every time I have raced a 172, I have beat them, and I have raced more than 10 of them, so it can't just be the driver.
But for Type R's, yes they do beat GTI's!!!
OOOO! The clio owners won't like that talk, I have to say I can't see how a 120 bhp GTI is gonna keep up, have you stripped it out?
Yeah I mean come on, 120 bhp vs. 172bhp as the 106 only a bit lighter than the clio, the power to weight only equates to approx. 146bhp per tonne, whereras the clio is 168 bhp per tonne.
Quite a difference.

All of this quoting power to weight ratios!
A Caparo T1 has twice the bhp per tonne as a Veyron, but it isn't faster.
Yeah I agree but they are a very good indication of a car's performance, and the clio is faster I have driven and raced both cars back to back.
Unless the 106 is tuned a bit then it won't be beating any sport clio's unless the driver is half asleep.
I have owned a Clio Williams, 106 GTi and a Clio 172, so here's my take on all this...
Subjectively, the Williams is the most fun and best handling, although I think the 172 would push it close in a race - it is quicker in a straight line and above 100mph. On track, versus a 172, the Williams hand the edge on the corners and could carry more speed though the bends, but the 172 could out-brake me.
The Peugeot is great for quick, tight corners but the 172 and Williams are better at high-speed bends. All in all, I think that both the 172 and Williams are quicker the the 106.
One thing I think some people have forgotten is what tyres are being used as, in my experience, it makes a massive difference. Even a few PSI down on the Williams would be detrimental to the handling.
Oh - and the Williams won't pull away from a 106 GTi @ 135mph. The short-ratio gearbox means the Renault would rev-out by then. The 106's rev-limiter is much higher and should pass 140mph on the clock.

The 106 would Pass 140 on the clock? So whats that in real mph, about 127? Not even the 172 would do 140.
120 bhp isn't enough to get you to 140mph, the s1 lotus elise has 120 bhp and is even lighter than a saxo/106 and will only do 125 mph, for 140 your gonna need at least 170bhp or more!
I have a 106 XSi with a 1.6 16v gti engine.. piper cams, high comp pistons, steel rods, TB setup, DTA ECU etc.. 205 BHP.. I can assure you it's much faster than Integras and Civic Type R's.
