The 106 would Pass 140 on the clock? So whats that in real mph, about 127? Not even the 172 would do 140.

I have a 106 XSi with a 1.6 16v gti engine.. piper cams, high comp pistons, steel rods, TB setup, DTA ECU etc.. 205 BHP.. I can assure you it's much faster than Integras and Civic Type R's.

I have two 106 GTIs and they are both very fast. One is 155bhp and will do 140mph, My brother is selling his 172 Clio because he is tired of being beaten by a little 1.6.

He should have kept it, he wouldn't need to spend as much as you to be back in front.

The 106 GTi is the same as a Saxo VTS powerwise. I owned a VTS with a decat and induction kit, lowered 60mm, and 0-60 it did it in 7 sec flat, but when racing a 172, once hitting 3rd gear onwards, the 172 pulled away from me quite a bit, and so on into 4th and 5th. Granted they are easily tunable to beat 172 Clios to 60 with exhaust filter, slammed etc, but will not hit 140mph, possibly 130 tuned up a bit. Still, they are pocket rockets in 1st and 2nd.

How are people getting figures such as 140mph? Just because the clock on the speedo goes upto 140mph does not mean it is actually doing 140mph.

I've got a 106 GTi modified with cams, induction, remap etc. and it will do 130mph and it will marginally beat Type Rs. It's a lot of fun and I love it, but I love the Civic Type Rs and want to buy one, but now it annoys me that I'm getting a car that is slightly slower!

Despite the Civic being more reliable and generally better in every way, 106's are just special!

Just spend the same modding the Civic... Exhaust, better air intake (I think Gruppe M is the best) and then K-pro and you'd have another 20bhp or more.

Or if you're into your tuning, just buy a turbo petrol and do it cheaply.

The Civic as you say is a better car in every way, and even if it was marginally slower, it would probably only be 0-60; at higher speeds even a fettled 106 GTi would struggle to keep up.

You must be racing grannies driving Civic Type Rs, cos a proper driver behind the wheel of a Type R would leave your 106, even with cams and a remap.

Yes, that's what I thought, but trust me, they can't. I have driven a standard CTR and it wasn't as fast as my GTi. With the mods it is 158bhp and 134 @ the wheels, and that's a car that weighs less than 950kg... it's quick. I'm sure with a few mods the CTR will be quicker though, and that's why I'm going to get one.

I've gotta standard 106. Raced plenty of these 172 cup owners. It's the same; 1st and 2nd, then the Clio takes off a wee bit.. no matter though, I've smoked them all, just out brake them and get the foot down first, understeer and smoke everywhere.. bye bye Cup haha.

And I've had 140 too, got a VTR gearbox, it does 130 in 4th :)

You sound like the man!!

Why compare modded to standard? If you spend enough on any car, you can make it faster than something else. A standard Civic Type R is faster than a 106 GTI, and past 70mph will pull a very large gap on one. A 106 GTI is a lot cheaper car, but considerably older. Clio 172/182s are much the same as a Civic, and a 106 may stick with them in twisty conditions, but once on a straight, they will again out muscle the little GTI!

4th Aug 2010, 14:02

"Remember, it's only a 1.6. If it was so bad and slow, you wouldn't be on here trying to justify that your much more expensive 2lr cars are faster."

HAHA the irony made me laugh. I'm not defending any other cars, the 106 is what it is. If you need to modify it or whatever else, then go for it. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for, and there are many reasons beyond speed why those 2 litre cars tend to cost more.

4th Aug 2010, 17:09

140 mph LOL.

It's a 120 bhp car; it won t get anywhere near that!

It s a good little car and quick 0-60, but top end it's nothing that special, as it's not that powerful. Why do people always come on here with overblown claims, trying to make out their car is more than it is?

And a exhaust system will shave a second off the 0-60 time?

That must be some special exhaust!

4th Aug 2010, 20:45

You're right, they do cost a LOT more. Which is why I am saying with the 106, you get a LOT of car for your money.

5th Aug 2010, 08:08

They don't cost a lot more really as you're talking about Clio Sports, and they can be bought for nearly the same money. A 106 GTI in reasonable condition is 2-3k, and you can get Clio 172s for that money!

You're not getting a lot of car for your money particularly, it's just an old car and that's what they are now worth.

5th Aug 2010, 11:38

The top speed of the VTS and GTI is 127 MPH, no more. Get a real fast car and you will see how overblown your claims are. I used to think my Nova 1.6 GSI was quick until I got an Impreza STI.

1st Nov 2010, 07:35

Well to be honest, I think you're all talking rubbish. You're comparing 1.6 to a 2.0 ltr. It's like comparing your 172's and Civic Type Rs to an EVO.

Can you send me please the changes you made to your 106 GTi and the dyno graph?

I own standard 106 GTi (decat-pipe improve and min modifications). 126.7 at the wheels. Never opened the motor. Is this possible?

Thanks.
