1999 Peugeot 206 GTi 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not the experience a new car should provide

Faults:

The central locking was 'cycling' making it difficult to keep the car locked.

The airbag warning light kept coming on.

The battery was flat after a 3 week holiday and 6 months after purchasing the car.

The radio would sometimes stay on when the car was left.

The car kept stalling; especially dangerous in heavy traffic.

It took a lot of letter writing to both dealer and Peugeot UK and some six months before I obtained some action; but it took over a year and a half before recurring faults were fixed.

Most of this work was carried out outside the 1 year warranty period.

Now you can get 3 years warranty.

General Comments:

Tacky plastic interior fittings.

I wouldn't want to purchase a new car again having suffered at the hands of both the manufacturer and dealer.

1999 Peugeot 206 XT 1.9 diesel from Netherlands

Summary:

Really like it, but it could do with an extra 15 horses

Faults:

The cooling fan complete destroyed the radiator, and therefore I was stranded at the McDrive with a steaming engine. This happened on the second day I had the car!

General Comments:

It's a nice, quite spacey, and comfy car.

It has really good seats.

It doesn't feel really slow until you try to overtake someone or go anywhere over 80 km/hour, for petrol heads and generally everybody who wants to do lots of highway miles I strongly recommend a HDi, although the diesel isn't scared of getting its pants revved off.

1999 Peugeot 206 XS 1.6 petrol from Netherlands

Summary:

If it was built like a German car you would have an unbeatable combination

Faults:

There is a rattling sound in the suspension. The dealer can't seem to find it. It is really starting to irritate me!

At 5000 km I noticed the tail lights were full of water. My garage solved it but they were wet again after a month or 2.

At 15000 km the the driver's seat wasn't properly attached to the floor and began to make sounds (squeaking, rattling, etc.) A new seat-frame was placed, but I had the same problem again after about two weeks!

General Comments:

Beautiful designed car (inside and outside), but there are alway sounds and noises when driven and the dealer support is very bad. As if they really don't know how to solve a problem with this car.

The rattling sound is not the suspension, it's the engine mount, get the dealer to put the fix kit on, it works.

1999 Peugeot 206 GTI 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fast, but very badly built and backed up by dealers

Faults:

The car was on order for six weeks, but the sports pack still hadn't arrived when I eventually found out the car was in stock.

The piece of plastic that runs between the headlights was a different shade to the rest of the car.

The locking wheel nuts had not been fitted.

There was a rattle coming from around the exhaust after about 100 miles. This was rectified by the dealer and I was told it was a loose shock absorber.

The central locking is now playing up at 10,000 miles and I am unable to lock the car at all, even from the inside or with the key. I have tried to book it in with the dealer but have been told the next appointment is not for a week, even though I am unable to lock the car. I tried another dealer but was told exactly the same thing.

General Comments:

Other than all the faults, the car is quite nice to drive, very fast and even economical if you don't push it.

The interior feels very cheap but the general shape of the interior and exterior is attractive.

After all the faults I will never buy a Peugeot again and wouldn't recommend one to my friends.

I recently got rid of my 206 GTi after 20k miles. Great drive, but I have to agree to an extent that the build quality is crap if you consider that you are paying twice the cost of an entry level 206. No effort has been made at all to upgrade the cabin. It may look different with the fake suede trim but it ultimately isn't and it never stops squeaking and rattling.
