2002 Peugeot 206 GTi 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Avoid it like the plague

Faults:

Breaks down every morning.

Brakes failed.

Battery replaced.

Door does not close properly.

Body trim came off in the rain.

Interior light dropped off and hit me on the head whilst I was driving.

Fog lights shorted.

General Comments:

Handling is scary.

Can occasionally go fast if you can get it started.

It should be renamed the Peugeot Dog.

You can see the headlights through the wings.

I keep having annoying teenagers wearing baseball caps coming up to admire it. They think I'm joking when I ask them to steal it.

It really does not like going up hills and makes a most strange noise, reminiscent of a 2CV.

The leather chairs are really nasty, they look and feel like bin bags and kill your back over long distances.

I am going to sell it to see whether I can salvage anything financially, Anyone want it?

2002 Peugeot 206 LX 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not cheap, and not a cheerful run about

Faults:

Indicator COM2000 module. Replaced in August with new one, but same fault developed whereby radio comes on full volume, indicators don't stay on, end up flashing headlamps when indicating right. Dealers, Castles in Leicester, don't have a clue about customer service. One minute the Com2000 is in stock, then next it's now withdrawn by Peugeot. Then its in stock again. Not satisfactory.

General Comments:

Great car to drive, in a straight line, but anything that involves using indicators means the car is annoying to drive.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems with the 206, but it is my opinion that you have really been unlucky with the car. I own a 2002 206LX, and have done 5000 miles with no problems, and I know of others who have done many times that with no problems either, so all the problems you have had in under 2000 miles just seem really unfortunate and definitely in the minority compared to other 206 owners.

I do, however, share your views on the poor service provided by the dealers, but rarely do you come across a dealer who offers top notch service, although they all should.

2002 Peugeot 206 XS 2.0 HDi from Netherlands

Summary:

Affordable, comfortable, good looking, fast going diesel!

Faults:

Surprisingly for a Peugeot, this car has never really let me down so far. Not even rattles and squeaks. I only saw the dealer with the delivery of the car. Its first service is due now, at 20000 km.

There are a few minor electrical problems, though. One day the dashboard completely went nuts, all indicators fell to zero, the red STOP light started to flash. But before I could park my car on the hard shoulder, everything went back to normal. It never occurred again, though sometimes I see the STOP light flashing briefly.

Finally, the aircon is getting smelly.

General Comments:

I had to replace the right front headlight bulb last week: it took me an hour to replace! The engine bay is so full, you have to remove the filler pipe from the windscreen washer tank and still you need long, thin fingers to get the headlight cover off.

Another annoying design feature is the automatic windshield wiper interval speed setting, because at motorway cruising speed it is often too fast. I can recommend the rain sensor option.

But that does not outweigh the luxury and performance of this little car. Its 2 liter common-rail Diesel engine makes the car go like a rocket, the engine's torque is great, the road holding is superb, with 195/55 tires on 15" alloys the cornering is precise and the seats in this XS model are very good, mine has the all-leather option. And it's not just the inside, the outside looks very, very good too!

The only thing really disappointing to this car is its fuel mileage. Before this car was delivered to my, I drove a bigger, heavier VW Golf TDI, which easily did 5 l./100 km. The 206 HDi with the same driver and the same roads does 6 l./100 km average. But then again, the VW is much less fun driving, looks as astonishing as a milk carton and for the price of my almost full-option 206 I can't even get a basic VW.

This is an addendum to the review above:

The car is now at 88,000 kms and there hasn't been a single reason to see the dealer in-between the 20,000 km service intervals. There is only one problem which the dealer can't seem to fix: in heavy rain (I mean really heavy rain), apparently some electrical problems occur which causes the engine computer to go into an emergency program, which limits performance (not a real problem, since in heavy rain one doesn't want to drive fast). The others are Peugeot's design failures: an oil level indicator who complains too fast about low oil level (even when the dipstick shows the oil level is up to the upper mark!) and the dashboard electronics which reboot once in a while.

Oh, I do recommend other tires than the Continentals which were fitted when I got the car new. They become very noisy, change them to Michelins as soon as you can. The front tires lasted only 40,000 kms, the Michelins are slightly better, but I expect they need replacing soon.

2002 Peugeot 206 CC SE 2 litre GTI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Brilliant - but don't pay British prices

Faults:

Cigarette lighter not working.

Intermittent fault with indicators.

General Comments:

This car is pure fun - not for the responsible owner.

Officially 2 + 2 but better forget the back seats except in an emergency.

I love this car - it drives like a dream.
