1995 Peugeot 306 SR 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Lambda sensor in catalytic convertor needed replacement at first MOT.

Engine once cut out, and refused to start for a couple of minutes - turning the key did not turn the starter motor.

Rear brake fluid leak.

Front seat tilt and slide mechanism broke. (3 door car).

Alarm goes off when you start the engine (intermittant).

Had the front fog lamp stolen (50 quid for a replacement]

General Comments:

Good looking car, especially with alloys. Local dealer is pretty useless. Had enough of the problems and will probably end up going for something more reliable next time.

I have had a '98 model with 46,500 miles accrued, for two years, I have found it totally reliable in ALL conditions, perhaps because I have it serviced at the suggested intervals, by an authorised dealer, also I haven't had my front fog lamps stolen... strange!

Everyone I speak to concerning this model has nothing but good thing's to say about them, shame they're so rare and difficult to find (let alone catch).

Lambda valve (controls fuel) has had to be replaced twice.

Sunroof leaks in heavy rain.

Interior light switch does not work.

Immobiliser keypad has a mind of its own, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

The finished product isn't perfect i.e. runs in paintwork, a few little rattles.

Peugeot dealers in my experience are terrible, the only reason I used them was to keep the warranty valid, as soon as the warranty ran out I used smaller garages.

General Comments:

A brilliant car which I don't regret buying as it looks good and the drive is excellent. However if you are after a sports hatch it needs a few more bhp and better brakes - go for the Gti if you really want a 306.

Many thanks steve

Touch wood, Its been quite reliable. Interesting comment about that lambda valve thingy, I have an orange light that comes on periodically.

I would agree with it needing more power, the brakes / chassis and handling are too good for the amount of power on tap.

I have had a 306 for 18 months now and it has been very reliable and economical, but an electrical problem with the lights is really bugging me!

Side lights come on OK,main beam does not come on at all, but full beam shines on one side only... both bulbs have been replaced and exactly the same happens! HELP?

Had an XSI 8v and it would out run almost anything on the bends. needed a bit more go mid range, would go up a slight hill and stick at certain revs, but 8v much more versatile than any 16v.

1. Courtesy light activator switches missing from both rear doors. (Installed after a battle)

2. Boot light bulb and glass missing. Also switch to activate boot light was missing. (Installed after battle)

3. Whistle from drivers side wing mirror. (Fixed)

4. Clock going fast. (fixed after two visits to dealer)

5. Intermittent rattle from passenger side rear door. (never fixed)

6. Engine cooling fans apparently not cutting in when in slow moving traffic. (Switch replaced after 3 referrals to main Dealers)

7. Strange sound from the engine. Dealer said it was a problem with one of the Injectors.

8. Drivers side wing indicator light not working. (Fixed)

9. Car was recalled to Main Dealers for unspecified problem.

** The above problems were covered under warranty. Car now out of warranty but still covered by Warranty Extension. (Peugeot Assistance)

10. Dipped headlight blown on drivers side. NOT covered by W/E

11. Boot jammed shut and could not be opened. (fault = Rusty bolt)

12. Passenger side dipped headlight blown. NOTcovered by W/E

13. Front wheel alignment had to be re-set.

14. Replaced passenger side brake light bulb.

15. Installed passenger side rear fog light bulb. There was no bulb installed.

16. Again had to replace passenger side headlight bulb. Dipped light was blown again.

** Warranty Extension (W/E) expired.

17. Had to replace driver side window winder (regulator). Cable had become rusty and frayed. Was replaced at half price (£60) because car was so new.

18. AGAIN !! had to replace drivers side head light bulb. As before the dipped light had blown.

General Comments:

This was my first ever new car. I have been rather disappointed with all the niggly problems as well as the more serious faults. I intend to change to a different manufacturer as soon as I can afford to. Would NOT recommend Peugeot to my friends.

General Comments:

Brilliant, cheap to run, 550-600 miles on a £32.00 tank, quite fast when turbo comes in, practical, looks nice with alloy wheels, will probably get another new shape one.

Stiff clutch cable, a few minor rattles.

General Comments:

Excellent ride, sharp handling, refined and powerful engine. Build quality not up to VW standards, but no real problems. Automatic air conditioning well worth £350 instead of sunroof. 6000 mile servicing and 40-42 mpg mean it is not the cheapest diesel to run - but it is good to drive.

Gearbox leak two weeks after being bought brand new. Peugeot failed to fix problem twice. Car still has a small oil leak.

Driveshafts replaced twice within one year of being bought.

Gearbox problems still keep popping up.

Brake cylinder leaks front and back. Whole slave cylinder units replaced front and rear because Peugeot do not sell the unit seals separately.

Electric window motor replaced.

Drive shaft boots.

General Comments:

The single most expensive car I have ever owned. I am unable to sell the vehicle because no one in the Middle East wants to buy one.

Besides the reliability factor, the car is comfortable and easy to drive at low and high speeds.

The engine is powerful for its size and always willing if a little harsh at high revs.

Has a lot of character (Unusual and welcome amongst the jelly mould 90's).
