I'm 61 years old. Bought a '69 used in '75. Was 400 4 speed.
Rear was posi but never checked the precise ratio. It was a likely a 4:11 or the Pontiac cousin of that ratio. Blew the 400 twice. A friend found a '70 Olds 455" "Torquer". It had 455 ft.lbs. of torque and 425 horsepower with a Quadrojet carb. I had the heads shaved slightly and put a 750 double pumper on the intake. Traded by brother-in-law rear ends for the 3:08 or so out of an Olds 88 4 door sedan.
At 1600 rpms in fourth we were going 60 mph. I once had it up to 5700 rpms on a straight stretch of interstate. I loved the sound of the rocket engine. When discussing cars, nothing is sweeter to the ears.
By the way, the only modification to the engine and tranny swap was to extend the alternator wire to reach the other side of the engine.
The car was red with a white vinyl roof, white leather inside with black rugs.
New stock mufflers without tail pipes. Heads turned when the purr was heard.
