1994 Renault 19 Blizarre 1.9 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An owners nightmare around 100,000

Faults:

Need a new gearbox, clutch and pressure plate, wheel bearings 8, back brake cylinders, front fog lambs cracked and needed replaced for MOT, gearbox mountain, bonnet rotted at front and had to be replaced, bottom ball joints, two track rod ends, boot back hing snapped and numerous other minor problems.

General Comments:

The 19 diesel non turbo that I have is slow, and can get you into trouble while overtaking. It does about 35 MPG and started using oil around 110,000. The small diesel filter leading to the main one can get blocked at times, and causes the car to jolt while driving. But as for comfort, this car is great.

I had one of these at 105,000 miles until 135,000 miles and had the same general suspension bush problems (common on high mile diesels).

On the other hand, though, I had no trouble at all getting well over 50mpg (never had less than 45) and sometimes on a run it would just see 60.

I totally agree with the lack of power when overtaking. the engine responds and you think you'll have the power to get past, but then it tails off just as you pull out and you're left stranded.

I never had the rust on the front or broken fog lights and I would presume this is down to someone driving too close on a motorway at some point.

I did have minor problems too and I believe this is the norm with most older Renaults, but the engine was totally reliable all the time.

1994 Renault 19 DTi 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Surprisingly nippy for a diesel

Faults:

Rear brake cylinders leaked at 61000 miles.

New alternator fitted at 75000 miles.

Brake compensator failed at 85000 miles.

General Comments:

Very economical, I return around 58 miles per gallon regularly and have seen as much as 60 on occasion.

My wife suffers from back problems and the seats offer her very good support.

Always starts first time in the morning regardless of the weather and temperature.

1994 Renault 19 1.4e Europa 1.4e E7J from Greece

Summary:

A VERY reliable, quite fast family car

Faults:

There has been very little gone wrong with this car so far.

Battery at about 100.000km (6 years of use)

Engine thermostat at 150.000km (just 15euros)

Rear right drum brake pump at 175.000km.

A couple of fuses and a front headlight bulb over 8.5 years of use.

General Comments:

Relatively good performance, with space for 4 people & luggage. Good handling & feel. But comfort, luxuries & safety are sparse.

Excellent fuel economy and good drive-ability compared to the competition.

Very good quality on most parts, with nothing having fallen of or even making noise.

The E7J 1.4 Energy engine is quiet, refined and able to move the car an high speeds.

The fuel economy is great. With careful driving and a light right foot you can easily do 750km on a full tank.

The only "bad" part in my R19, are the brakes, which I find to be quite weak and tend to overheat and get soft especially when the car is heavy and/or driving downhill.

1994 Renault 19 16v 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fast, fun and economical

Faults:

The steering rack had to be replaced.

There have been various coolant problems.

All the disc's have had to be replaced.

Two brake calipers have gone wrong and been replaced.

General Comments:

Despite the various faults this car has been a lot of fun.

Even now it still looks good and has the performance to match.

It is prone to minor dents especially on the bonnet and the front fog lamps tend to get damaged very easily.

It also tends to run hot in slow moving traffic, good job it has a good fan, it needs it!
