1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Drives like a rocket on heat

Faults:

Clutch started slipping at 85,500 miles, new one fitted under warranty.

Seals broke and pistons locked onto the rear discs.

General Comments:

Blinding performance 0-60, 7.2 secs for a 1.4!!

Few tweaks and quite able to embarrass Cossie drivers.

Idles a little high sometimes, trip to a rolling road planned to set the fueling.

1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The one and only pocket rocket!

Faults:

I have had to replace the battery three times.

The starter motor went and the turbo.

I have also had several coolant hoses split.

General Comments:

I've spent a lot of money on this car and I will never get it back. But I still think it is worth it.

1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

One hell of a quick money magnet!

Faults:

I have replaced:-

Petrol tank.

Rear callipers.

Steering rack.

Exhaust.

Turbo `L' piece.

Fuel pump.

Water pump.

Gearbox.

Clutch.

Starter motor.

Heat shield.

Wheel bearings.

Leads.

Hose split.

Carb elbow knackered.

Can't remember the rest but you name it & it will go wrong at some point!!

General Comments:

I always wanted one so I brought one!!

Don't be fooled into thinking these are normal cars - they are not. They are a major drain on the bank account so seriously think before buying one (they are good fun though - when they're running).

Totally agree with your review. Take note if you thinking of buying one!

1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Turbo blown, head gasket blown, water pump broken, speedo knackered, rear brakes seized.

General Comments:

The 5 Turbo is an absolute belter of a car for anyone who loves the thrill of rapid acceleration but can't afford a big motor. I love mine to bits and it just keeps on getting better.

1990 Renault 5 TL 1.1 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

CV joints required replacement early.

Steering column twisted.

Brakes became (very!) noisy.

Spontaneously combusted!!

General Comments:

Potentially cheap car to run, but many trips to the garage meant costs began to mount up... then came home one day to find it had caught fire (the Fire Brigade suspect an electrical fault in the engine bay) and there wasn't much of it left! Quite fun to drive though.

1990 Renault 5 Campus 1.1 from Singapore

Faults:

From 50,000 miles till now (62,000miles):

Radiator leaked, fan stopped, rear brakes seized (rear wheel cylinders and bearings had to be replaced), head gasket blew (did a top overhaul), front shocks replaced, driveshaft replaced, front brake discs replaced, clutch renewed

General Comments:

All the above were done in the last 12 months. Not a very reliable car. Parts cheap, though. Requires specialist care. However, it is a joy to drive and extremely economical. Much better than any Japanese supermini.

1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Turbo, slight overheating, sticking boot.

General Comments:

Still one of the sexiest motors on the road today, stunning looks, awesome reputation and performance to give you a grin from London to Bristol!! Will definitely be a classic one day, so I'm holding on to mine for a while yet!!

1990 Renault 5 Campus 1.1 petrol from Serbia

Faults:

It had a general engine rebuild after 150000 km, also some problems occured with brakes and gear lever spring. There were some major rusty spots, but, since it was totally crashed twice, it was not a surprise.

General Comments:

Not a bad car at all. And do you know what's the best part? I sold it to a guy who knew the car for five years (including wrecks) and he is satisfied.

Only big problem is expensive parts.

I have bought 5 GT Turbo but, since I totalled it 2 weeks after purchase that review will follow not very soon.

1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo Phase 2 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Turbo, alternator, water pump, coolant hoses, anti-percolation fan.

General Comments:

Excellent small fast hatchback. Handles very well (the benefits of a stiff FWD car).

Easy to get hold of performance parts and lots of them still about even though it is an "old" car.
