I've had my '97 Clio since 2006. So far I've had the brakes replaced, all four tyres replaced, the starter motor replaced, suspension springs, had a clip come off the hose that connects to the coolant bottle... the list goes on.

Then yesterday while in slow moving traffic due to an accident on the motorway, the engine cut out. It's been doing this for about a week now; only this time I was in the fast lane. With an angry lorry driver behind me.

Started it again... moved about 100 metres.. and it died again, this time it would not restart. Angry lorry driver got out and shoved me over to the side of the road so he could get past (not sure if I'm grateful that he helped me, or annoyed that he called me a f****** idiot) and had to call Green Flag AGAIN (by the way, Green Flag are AMAZING!).

The recovery guys came and the top had come off the coolant bottle. He put it back on and the engine restarted, and I managed to get home.

However, from looking on here I doubt that this is the root of the problem. My car is so dangerous and I've taken it to so many garages, only to be told it's an intermittent fault and they won't touch it.

Perhaps time to scrap it? :/

Hi, my girlfriend has bought a Renault Clio Y reg 1.2 16v sport. She loves the car, but hated it when it cuts out and the electronic light comes on, then goes into limp mode.

After looking at all the information on the net, the only thing I could find was the black cage chafing the ECU plug wiring, so I checked that and couldn't see any signs of chafing. So I insulated the wires and secured the bottom half of the cage as I couldn't get it off. The engine was still cutting out, and the electrical light still came on. It was stressing my girlfriend out, and her moaning was stressing me out! LOL!

So I did some more research, and found a thread on a website which seemed more helpful. Basically, you remove the air box, inlet manifold and rocker cover and all sensors until you can get the cover off. You clean all the oil out of the box, clean the throttle housing with carb cleaner, then replace in reverse order, fit new inlet manifold gaskets which cost £25 from Renault. You replace with a new air filter.

The car hasn't cut out since. So I recommend everyone who has problems with their engine cutting out and electric light coming on, then check the metal cage hasn't chafed the ECU wiring. Secondly check your air filter isn't contaminated and take the inlet manifold/rocker cover off and clean all the oil out.

Don't take your car to garages as they just rip you off and don't have a clue! Always try and fix yourself! Hope this helps.

For the message on the 24 of June for the person that fixed their girlfriend's Clio; was she having problems with it in the rain also, and how long has it been driving fine, because mine drives perfect providing it's not raining or been raining?

My Epileptic Clio!

2001 Y-plate Clio 1.2 8v (d7f engine code).

Well, like many others, I too stumbled on this thread while searching for a solution to my little Clio's illness, and I'm relieved to find out I'm not the only one!

It first kicked off last week while driving to Asda. The car started to have what I can only describe as an epileptic fit at the traffic lights. The rev counter was jumping all over. The dash lights were dimming. The engine was coughing and spluttering like hell. The lights changed to green, I went to pull away and... nothing! The car wouldn't rev up, I couldn't pull away. I was basically limping away from the traffic lights with my hazards on. I then came to a complete standstill - right in the centre of a major crossroads. The car was still chugging, then, suddenly sprang back to life and I was able to pull away. Luckily, it was late at night, so there wasn't much traffic around. The car was fine the rest of the journey, as if nothing had happened! It couldn't have been fuel. I wouldn't have gotten all the way to Asda if it was.

A few days later, and this time with plenty fuel on board, the car started fitting again. This time I noticed that as soon as the rev counter hit 2000 RPM, I would lose all power. Anyway, I just dropped a gear, put my foot to the floor and managed to pull out of it. It wasn't so bad this time round, and again, the car was performing faultlessly afterward.

That was to be short-lived however, as today, in rush hour, it decided that a major roundabout on the A19 was the perfect place to have another fit! This time I was really bricking it, as I had people all around me staring and shaking their heads in disbelief, as if I'd stopped to have a picnic or something. But, as the time before and the time before that, it picked up again, and I got home without a problem.

I'm not sure if my car is affected by the 'loom of doom', as my car has the earlier 8 valve engine, not the 16 valve phase 2 as so many are experiencing, but I will check it over tomorrow.

I am just going to check over the cheapest-to-replace parts first, before I get to the expensive ones i.e sensors first, throttle body, coils/coil pack later.

I may be wrong, but why are Renault charging fortunes to replace a chaffed wiring loom, when surely it could be repaired by an auto-electrician, or even better, yourself?

But, until I find the cause of the problem, I'm afraid my little Clio remains epileptic.

Clio 1.5 dCi.

I own a 55 plate Clio, and noticed recently that my n/s side lights and reg lights are out! There doesn't seem to be a fuse which covers either side! Is there another fuse box situated anywhere else, other than left hand side of the steering column?

Paul..

Same problem as everyone else, cutting out when it feels like it, loss of power, warning lights blah blah blah... nothing on a fault diagnosis machine. Went to a local garage (not Renault authorised); all fixed for £83 inc vat :D He replaced the crank shaft. Seems fine so far (touch wood)...

WEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee Happiness :D.

Hope it helps someone else :D.

I have a Clio Dynamique, and am having trouble with it jumping out of second gear. This seems to happen at low speeds such as turning corners etc.

I have had all the engine mounting changed, and changed again. It has recently been into the garage, and he has changed them again, and is baffled why it is doing it.

Can anyone else help??? It's driving me crazy now.

Well, well, well, same story from me I'm afraid.

My daughter has a Renault Clio 1.2 51 plate, and sure as eggs are eggs, has had the same symptoms as described in most of the posts on here ie cutting out/loss of power etc. Bearing in mind she has only just passed her test, and it's her first car and she is nervy enough without having it cut out without warning at all.

Well so far I have cleaned the throttle body, replaced the wiring loom and replaced the carb/throttle body, admittedly with second hand parts, and re-taped up the wiring in the black box behind the manifold; all to no avail.

I had a friend run the test on it, and it's coming up with 6 hard faults, which he thinks he can reset, but now unfortunately the car will now not even start at all.

Does anyone know if I need to reset it?? re do anything before I can actually start the car, as it's proving extremely hard to arrange for the car to vanish and never to be seen again, due to the fact it won't start, and I don't really fancy a burnt out car outside my house, as my neighbours are quite nice.

Yours in hope

The fire starter.
