2002 Renault Laguna Dynamique 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Has the looks and the temperament!

Faults:

1st item on the agenda, the remote alarm decides to arm itself.

Then after a brief period goes off, Renault say you can deactivate this sensor, this still doesn't work, the only solution believe it or not was to leave the sunroof open on a very small setting.

Car is booked in at the main dealer however this won't be for a fortnight!

Clutch seems to slip.

Makes a horrendous banging / clunking noise from front near side drive shaft. Engages and disengages OK, but is very temperamental in traffic.

Drive to slowly in any gear and it won't acclerate properl.

Seems to labor quite a bit, then when you eventually slow down it drops the revs quite dramatically. After this the clutch / drive shaft noise appears.

General Comments:

As a sales manager for a car dealership, this is a big let down. (I do not work for Renault)

The car looks the part & has plenty of go for a 1.8.

Specification is great.

Build quality not as good as last car.

Some little niggles that could prove troublesome in years to come!

I tend to agree with this reviewer's comments. Had my 2003 Laguna 2 for a year now. Both front door electric windows have failed & been replaced: heater seems to blow hot air somewhere under dash making my left leg 'warm' and the plastic 'key' unnervingly hot when removed after a long trip. Engine / transmission excellent & good economy. Build quality, especially inside, is poor compared to rivals. Will sell soon & consider a Ford Mondeo!!

2002 Renault Laguna Sport Tourer Dynamique 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

This car has been a huge disappointment

Faults:

Tire pressure sensors were problematic from new- dealer offered to disconnect system!

Driver's seat squeaked badly from new despite several repair attempts.

Headlamp washers ceased to retract from 30000 miles to present.

Turbo inter cooler buckled at 40,000 miles (repaired under warranty)

Brakes required complete overhaul at 45,000 miles (cost 600 GBP)

Car seized in gear at 48000 miles- gear lever linkage broke (repaired under warranty)

Clutch casing cracked - replaced under warranty at 50000 miles (car off road for 8 days)

At 54000 miles, gearbox feels very rough.

General Comments:

Very stable comfortable car.

Excellent carrying capacity.

Very good fuel economy.

Extremely unreliable.

Expensive to repair when out of warranty.

Massive depreciation on new cost.

I had same problem with drivers seat. They do not lubricate the lift/lower mechanism pivots, therefore it squeaks. I removed the seat, and applied spray grease. That was almost 2 years ago and the noise has not returned.

Just ADD a can of petrol. I had such a desire to do just that, when we had the downright HORRID experience of life and ownership with a Renault.

I firmly believe Renault build disposable cars. They last a couple of... DAYS! then all you have to do, is just pop them in the bin ready for dispossol... a little bit like throw away contact lenses.

2002 Renault Laguna Privilege 2.2 DCI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Comfortable, roomy, but totally unacceptable reliability and quality

Faults:

Headlining at rear keeps falling down.

Engine mounting failed at 18,000 miles.

Exhaust recirculation valve clogged, producing smoke and loss of power.

Exhaust recirculation system failed again (25,000), stranding me miles from home, with no power - new parts fitted.

Seat recline mechanism broke (around 22000)

Gearbox needed new bearings (28,000)

Clutch failed (30000)

General Comments:

The car is a good design, and although not the most comfortable driving position is a relaxing and pleasant car to drive.

2.2 diesel is a good engine, powerful and reasonably quiet, and economical (around 40 mpg overall, but well into high 40s on long trip)

Handling is good, car responds if pushed.

Lots of internal storage space and good room. One disappointment is that rear seats don't fold flat (Sport tourer)

Mechanical reliability is quite appalling for a car of this class - it is one thing after another (see list above)
