I have a 1997 Megan. It has had 7 trips to Renault Garages to fix immobiliser problems and always mysteriously works for them? RAC, Greenflag and AA could not start the vehicle when it broke down and towed it to the Renault garage to be fixed.

Also had faulty wiring loom which caused intermittent trip out of the engine management system, usually whilst in the outside lane of the motorway... very unsettling! Problem was wires broken inside the loom that go to the TDC sensor. It took Renault a year with more than 5 visits to find this fault.

I also have a seized rear door and would be grateful for any advice on how to free it. Thankfully I have the diesel and my exhaust is OK.

The rattling exhaust is common it is due to the megane 96/99 models having two different exhaust systems. The first was a solid unit one single pipe and box. Unfortunately due to the angle they were prone to snapping in half so they began selling a split section with a main pipe and rear box component.

Unfortunately this means that the two have to be connected with a bracket or brace. When doing this if the back box and pipe have not been correctly aligned it will sit on the suspension arm (this is what causes the rattling noise + loud banging when hitting uneven ground)

When fitting it ensure that there is adequate clearance from the exhaust and the rear passenger suspension arm that it is above.

Hope this helps somebody. Shame it doesn't help me my rubbers have corroded that suspend the back box and I can't find replacements.

TRY KWIK-FIT... they replaced the back exhaust rubbers on my 98 Scenic.

Look folks. About this exhaust rattle. Just check along the length of the pipe because the aluminium heat shield that runs along the top of the exhaust and curves over the sides easily bends in towards the exhaust pipe. So the clearance is reduced and the pipe bangs against it whenever the engine shakes a bit (like pulling off, being in too low a gear etc.). Just bend it back out by hand. problem fixed. Until next time you drive fast through a big puddle when the rush of water will bend it back out of shape again. No, seriously. Just check it out yourself. I bend mine back every couple of months or so (but hey, I do enjoy big splashes...)

Owner of 1996 Megane E RT, will be getting rid of this march and will be 3 years owned. It has never broken down on me, started every time and is a decent enough drive for a first car. However it has cost me a small bit over the years to keep going.

First MOT.

Failed on Front Right Spring (Chipped/Broken), Rear Right Break Compensator. Around £350.

Second MOT.

Failed on Emmisions, needed new oxygen, lamda and fuel sensos. Failed on front brakes worn out, new pads & discs.

£600.

Third MOT.

Failure on Wheel Bearing, was going at the time.

£40.

Other work done on it.

Guess what, the exhaust, which fell off (literally), thankfully I was in a town close to home at the time and mangaged to nurse it home as the flexipipe snapped leaving hanging pointing down slightly.

There was a lot of rust. It was cheap enough to replace with a new exhaust from the flexipipe back for about £40.

Current I have an oil leak, it was coming from the rocker cover gasket, but there is from some where else and have so far been unable to locate it.

I've got a 1995 Megane 5 dr hatchback. The exhaust rattles (rubbers have perished) and the locks no longer work (have to crawl in through the passenger side). The gearbox also clunks from 1st to 2nd.

Apart from this the car has always started and still a decent looking cheap run around.

Hi all.

I have a rattle (2001 Megane) which sounds like its coming from the exhaust but it is only when I start the car in the morning or when it has been idle for hours. It rattles for about 2mins and then its gone?

Any clues as to whats causing it? I presume if it was an exhaust fault it would continue to rattle?

Thanks.

About the rattle; it does also happen to my kid brother's Alfa, but it only happens when the engine is cold. I guess, you and my kid brother share a common situation, despite the different tag.
