2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 from North America

Summary:

Overall, I love it except for the costly repairs.

Faults:

I had to replace the solenoid switch.

I also had to replace the the torque converter.

General Comments:

This vehicle is beautiful and I enjoy driving it (when it is not in the repair shop).

I am very disappointed with the costly repairs that I have had to pay along with the car note.

At least yours *came* with a solenoid switch. For years Toyota never put them on because they thought they knew better than everyone else. Eventually the starter system simply stops working like mine did. Re-wiring the system to add a solenoid switch will work, but is surprising to have to do since these things have been used since the dark ages. I hope your 4 Runner starts treating you better. Mine never did so I don't buy them anymore.

Starting problems have nothing to do with solenoids; all you have to do is take off the main cable to the starter and clean it. Even if it doesn't look that dirty, it is nasty to get to by the way. Every two years our 4runner won't start, always in the winter, but it will start if you boost it. Clean the cable and contact, and you are home free for two years.

2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 3.4 V6 from North America

Summary:

The best SUV ever, for price, and off road ability

Faults:

This truck is 3 years old and I bought it used with over 60000 miles and it runs like I just drove it off the lot. Nothing has gone wrong with it.

General Comments:

I am going to update the suspension (shocks, springs) because the ride feels like it is a 60K truck. The rear is starting to sag. common problem with trucks with coil rear springs.

Off-road!!! They lack suspension travel, which leads to rollover. Not to mention axle breakage due to oversized tires for the gearing.

2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 standard from North America

Summary:

The most reliable off-road vehicle made

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with the car other than standard things such as fluids and tires. I need to replace the shocks and springs, but that is due to excessive off-road use.

General Comments:

I have driven this truck through some of the most remote areas of the lower 48 on some of the most difficult trails any street vehicle can take. 95,000 miles in 2 years. Colorado San Juan mountains for 6 days, Nevada Black Rock desert for a week, The LoLo trail through Idaho. Much more. Used all the gears low and high 8-10hrs a day for weeks on end. Jeepers comment they are surprised a street vehicle (un-modified) can keep up on their stomping grounds. Many flat tires carried 2 spares at all times, but no fault of 4Runner. Truck still looks and rides like new when cleaned up. Change oil that's it. I pulled all the seats out (very simple and modular) and lived out of it for 2 months plenty of room for one person. I would take this vehicle anywhere in the world it is flawless. Wish the dashboard and cup holders had more room. Wish it had more interior hooks for hanging things.

I echo that. I have a 2000 4Runner 4WD and have about 50,000 miles on it through harsh prairie winters in Canada... i get called out in some pretty bad stuff including near blizzards at -30...with serious winter tires on and knowing 4Wd doesn't stop me any faster... it is my saviour... I can always rely on it...it's been the better part of four years and not a thing gone wrong.. I take up to my favourite trailheads and never worry about holes, creek crossings, washed out roads or the rocks on the mountain backroads... an awesome vehicle.. a regular tank... just don't buy it if you want a "high performance" 4WD drive...buy it for the truck that it is...
