1993 Toyota Carina XLi 1.6 from Netherlands

Summary:

A reliable car which is nice to drive

Faults:

I bought this car with a gear box that wasn't functioning quite well: sometimes it wouldn't get out of it's third gear. The dealer where I bought this car has replaced the gear box for another one.

One of my shock absorbers is leaking. I still have to get it repaired.

General Comments:

This is by far the best car I have had.

This car offers a lot of space and is easy to handle.

Although the car is quite comfortable, it is not a luxury car.

In my opinion, this car is very reliable. I don't drive in it everyday and it sometimes stays parked for a week. But every time I turn on the engine it runs smoothly. And that doesn't only count for the engine, but for the whole car.

My next car will probably be a Toyota Avensis.

1993 Toyota Carina GLi 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellence on wheels

Faults:

Going by the mileage the Carina E only needed wishbone bushings at 260000 miles.

A CV joint was fitted recently.

General Comments:

An unbelievably reliable car despite the

322k miles!

With its combination of comfort, speed and reliability this is a quality car well worth buying no matter what the mileage!

Carina, is, however noisy when driven hard.

1993 Toyota Carina GLi 2.0 16v from Slovenia

Summary:

Nice, sporty, spacious, fast - a Toyota as it should be

Faults:

The only thing that's gone wrong was the ABS system at 130.000 km, turns out, the sensor was damaged... but was replaced and worked fine since.

General Comments:

I got this car as a gift from my father, so we've owned it since 1995 and had, beside the ABS mentioned, absolutely no problem with it.

To my surprise nobody really mentioned the sporty heart of the car. It accelerates (from 0-100 km/h) in 9,0 sec, which is faster then any similar car, even a BMW or Audi. The gears are perfectly in-sync and the ratio is extremely sporty. With the superb aerodynamics (cv is about 0,28) it can outrun most of the cars on the road, even the much more expensive ones.

The suspension is very stiff, even stiffer then some tuned cars with Apex or similar sport-springs an shocks, which is a good thing, if you are a dynamic driver, but less good for the comfort.

The seats are phenomenal, many manufacturers sell similar seats as sport-seats (for instance VW).

The space it offers is also quite generous, the car is roomier than most similar cars.

The quality is superb, a fine example of japan craftsmanship, even the trunk carpeting is phenomenal.

The spear parts are quite expensive, but it's not a problem, since the car is very reliable and almost never breaks down.

All in all, I think the car is a very sporty package, suitable for young families, if offers lots of space, good traveling qualities, a very powerful engine (at least the 2.0 16V version), the fuel consumption is very low for a car of this size and performance (about 7-8 liters per 100 km), the car is reliable and nice to look at.

They've stop manufacturing them, but if you are looking for a reliable, yet fast used car, I can only recommend this Japanese peace of art.
