1984 Toyota Corolla 1.3 litre gasoline from Thailand

Summary:

Very durable but basic OLD car

Faults:

Nothing yet, though it did need a new battery within one week of purchase. The previous owner split that cost with me. They hardly ever drove it.

I had to put a new used A/C compressor in it - total cost around 4,500 baht ($125).

I think it will soon need a new clutch - when I let it out in first it tends to shudder a lot. This isn't the normal 'lugging the engine' shudder from not giving it enough gas (revs), its more like the clutch plate isn't gripping well. Anyone have any tips on diagnosing a bad clutch?

General Comments:

The car is great for Thailand, but I wouldn't make any long trips in it.

The sale price was close to $1,500 - back in the US this would be a $500 car.

I'm a little nervous about long term reliability due to the car's age, but hope it will serve for another couple of years.

Original poster here - please anyone give me some advice about this clutch. It is still doing the chuck-a-chuck-a-chucka vibration when I let it out in first, but also now it has actually SLIPPED several times as I accellerate in second gear.

Am I right in guessing this to be the clutch plate being worn out? I just want to know a bit more before I go in to face the Thai mechanics (language barrier, etc.)

Also anyone have any idea what it might cost?

1984 Toyota Corolla CS 1.3 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Bomb proof... budget motoring at it's finest

Faults:

Practically none... this car is bomb proof.

Replaced drivers seat approx 20,000 km ago due to sagging.

Replaced drivers window rail (inside door cavity) as it had rusted, approx 50,000 km ago.

Had electrics fixed about 50,000km ago. Cost about $100-.

Other than that just routine servicing...

General Comments:

This car has been through thick and thin with me and has been infallible. Was used for a short time as a courier car (by me) and never missed a beat. I now service it about once a year and it still putts along right as reign, in fact it is still used to pull my motorbike trailer 100km to the track and back once a month.

Gets by on the smell of an oily rag and services are cheap.

If you can find a good example of one of these second hand you can't go wrong. Get it!!!

Summary:

Old, but reliable car

Faults:

It is rusting here in Finland because of salted roads, still pretty good shape, welded only two spots.

Somebody is broke passengers door lock, trying to get inside.

I have no bigger problems with this car.

Windshield changed couple, cost about 200 euros, today I am lucky if I get 300 of this...

1984 Toyota Corolla FX-GT 4A-GE 1.6 twin Cam from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Cheapest, Most reliable, economical, high performance car

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Most reliable car I have ever owned. Done a few modifications to the engine and now the old girl rips V8's to shreds, simply because you can redline the engine with no major concern (as long as you keep the oil-level full.

Go buy one NOW, and don't worry about how many KM's it's done... THEY LAST FOREVER!

1984 Toyota Corolla CS 1.5 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

The most reliable car you could buy for under $10 000

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 260 000km. So whilst repairing this I also replaced the rings.

General Comments:

I bought this car for $500 two and half years ago in that time I have traveled over 60 000 km in my little old corolla. It may not be the prettiest car on the road, but in my opinion it is the finest, as when I have needed the corolla it has never let me down.
