1990 Toyota MR2 GT-TRD 2.0 turbo petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A tiger in sheep's clothing. Don't underestimate it!

Faults:

Flat battery from leaving the courtesy door lights running (my fault!)

Nothing else yet, bar the usual tyres, oil filters and regular maintenance...

General Comments:

Goes like stink. Mine's a Jap import and has most of the Toyota Racing Development mods, but never having driven a regular GT, I don't know how much difference it makes.

Will eat a Starlet GT for brekkie, scares a Merc Kompressor to death and have outrun an Imprezza WRX, although that may be due to the other driver's ineptitude, not either car!

Handles well but is crap on wet greasy roads.

Noisy and tiring on long hauls.

Next to NO luggage room-use only squishy bags as nothin else fits !

Not that economical- 12k per litre around town and 14k on the open road. Drinks the higher octane juice and is therefore pricey to feed (also uses pricey oil).

Have to replace the cam belt shortly before it goes bang and guts the engine.

The Toyota 3sge/te engine that these cars have are non-interference engines, so if the cam belt breaks it won't mess the engine up, you just take off the broken belt and put a on a new one and its good as new.

1990 Toyota MR2 GT 2.0 turbo from Japan

Summary:

Fun, fast and furious, but be careful!

Faults:

Steering rack boot, discs need replacing, targas leak in downpours (drips not streams), stereo faulty (manufacturer amp problem) and a spark lead blew through.

General Comments:

Fast and handles well. Difficult to find this much performance for the price. Dangerous to the uninitiated. Difficult to tell, especially in the wet, if the wheels are spinning. They have a sign that you have to learn when the tires lose traction in the rear. The back end feels like it is floating, time to back off the throttle.

I have yet to be blown away by anything and this includes modified similar displacment vehicles. (not as fast as an Evo, but it is not anything like the same price).

1990 Toyota MR2 GT Turbo 2.0 turbo from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Awesome

Faults:

Umm, I tried to clean the engine with a power washer and water got all clogged up in the spark plugs etc causing a major dose of misfiring.

General Comments:

Japanese import.

Awesome car.

The MR2 Turbo will whop the ass off the M3 and the Escort Cosworth.

Babes drool all over mine.

Isn't all that power scary at the rear wheels in a chassis that's not up to the job.
