I'm a mechanic too and I agree! There's no replacement for displacement. 6 cylinder is no match to v8's, v10, v12, v16...
If you want a super-fast road car buy a Supra. If you want a drag strip car buy a big v8. A Supra can be upgraded to 500bhp easily and still be reliable, fairly economical and fun to drive on the road. To make a Camaro, or any american v8, faster than a 500bhp Supra would require extensive mods, resulting in an unreliable totaly impractical car for road use. In short, be more scared if you see a Supra in your rear view mirror.
Anyway, the Germans make the best V8s don't they?
I guess this supra guy don't know what he's saying- or don't know much about cars technically... The best and the most durable and most powerfull v8's are American v8's. Italian Exotic cars such as Iso, de tomaso, etc... uses American v8's (chevy, ford) because they are so durable for heavy duty use. Industries uses american V8's for industrial purposes. Taxis are V8's- toyota engine will fall apart for industrial and commercial use. Toyota supra? Get real! That car are for rookies and teens. Like what the other guys said, bring your supra to the " world street nationals" and then brag after you race your street car. Just a warning- your supra might blow up over there- remember you'll be racing with over 200mph street legal v8's- that are much more durable comparing to your so-called sport car supra. Don't want to make you look like a fool- but a 4 cylinder WRX Subaru T is even faster than a supra TT 0-60 (stock to stock). Also remember you have to match cars that cost at the same price range. Even your supra is 1000 hp- your torque is still not comparable to a v8. Your engine displacement is too small- V8's are the cheapest to gain so much hp and torque. Again, a 1000 hp supra is no match to a 600-800 hp v8. What about a 8000hp v8? Can a supra 6 cylinder engine can handle 8000 hp? Get real- supra have such small displacement, and the engine block will crack. Let's face it, supras are kids stuff- for people who don't know what real hp and torque is. No offense. Ask professionals, not teenagers.
I agree! :) no offense to supra fans...
If you race a stock Supra against a stock Camaro the Supra will win hands down. With 320HP stock they can do around 4.8 sec yo 60. Those Z28 Camaros are not that fast. Just big growling engines, but the gears aren't there, the intake systems aren't there to name a few. The truth is those big V8s are mostly hype. They're menacing in the old days when 7.0 sec to 60 was considered fast. But they're no match to the new technology advanced fuel injected engines.
Consider the hemi dodge, which was a legend. The thing can only do 0-60 in 6.7 sec stock. And that was considered fast in those days. And now you've got the Mustangs and Camaros with 300HP max with body weights around 3500. No match for the Supra.
I am the supposed 'Supra guy' who hasn't got a clue. How ironic is it that I own a Subaru Impreza WRX and, despite having driven many, have never owned a Supra. The Subaru is based upon a world rally car. With immense traction and a short range gearbox nothing comes close to it on country roads. However a Supra, and I hope this will end the arguement, is the closest thing you can get to a Ferrari this side of £100K. It has the combination of performance, road-holding, reliability and economy that no American v8 can match.
Who cares about how much Hp you can modify an engine to produce. In the real world, on the road, any more than about 500-600 is pointless. The manufacturers of the fastest cars use relatively low displacement, lightweight, highly stressed engines because they realise that saving weight is more important to performance than excessive power.
Hey kid, supra are for teens who don't know what durability, hp, torque, etc... How about a ford GT? Do you think you're supra will have a chance with that? (205 mph factory stock American V8)
Get your 0-60 stock times on a 1968 hemi changer correct, it's 4.8 sec, faster than your supra's 5.1. Just take your so called sportcar to the "world street nationals". your car must be street legal or else you can't race. But just a warning- you'd look like a fool over there, why? You'll be racing with over 200 mph street legal 1/4 mile v8's.
Supra can't even match a stock 186 mile mph, 0-60 in 4 sec stock corvette. How about a viper? Get real kid! no offense, but just go to the world street nationals. See you at the race!
I agree, no offense to supra fans. :(
I used to be a supra owner and spent over 60 k, but still can't keep up with strong v8's. Sorry guys! I sold it and got a viper. I beat every supra owners I know- by far! Go v10's!
WRX? hmmm those are for people who's trying hard! For people who've never driven or raced with a strong big block American V8's. Take your car to the world street nationals before you bragg. Make sure that your car is street legal or else you can't race. Remember, you'll be racing with street legal v8's that can go over 200 mph, 7 seconds 1/4 mile. Can you beat that? You must be ignorant... no offense... there's no replacement for displacement. V8's, v10's, v12's, v16 are the real deal! no t a wimpy six and four bsngers- those are for kids!
Hey pal I think you misunderstood me; I'm not saying that the Supra would make a better 'drag racing' car than any American v8, I'm saying it's a far better sports car for the streets. The Corvette is the only real American competition it has, the Supra has similar performance, looks better, is far more reliable and a much better drive.
A Dodge Viper costs double the Supra, in-fact you could get a Porsche 996 Turbo for that money which would trash the Viper in a race.
You've proved to me you haven't got any idea about fast cars when saying what a great American car the Ford GT is. Do you know where it was designed and built?? The UK. Get back to School Kid!!
Hmmmm... It is still Ford... An American Company. Japanese cars are really made for economy... and they are disposable. Can you match a 60's Japanese car from the 60's muscle era with a big block, 500 hp street legal car? Noooo! How about a Japanese top fuel? Sorry, I was a sucker for a Supra TT before- I sold the car and will never buy another one. I've spent 60k and still can't catch up with the big boys, because the displacement is so small. So it's a sports car wannabe! No offense... watch out for strong v8's and v10's!
Hmmmm..V10 Dodge Viper; owned by Chrysler, who are owned by Mercedes, so by your reckonings its German!!
Japanese cars are easily the most reliable made, check the surveys. Also I don't think the Supra was made for economy- 3.0l Twin Turbo!!
I'd like to know how you spent 60K on a Supra, but more importantly WHY did you spend 60K on a Supra!! 2K will get you 600HP.
Supra tt has too much turbo lag- can't compete with strong v8's and v10's (no turbo lag.) I've driven my friend's turbo v8- there's no comparison- real raw power comand!!
Why don't you guys be reasonable, there are vehicles for sale band new with 10 sec quarter mile time at about 145 stock, for only 10gs. The V8's are nice, I like them, but there is no street legal v8 with 7000hp. Top fuel cars are the only ones with that hp and they have a fuel mixture which is not legal on the street.
Very interesting arguments. I like.
