Nobody would be stupid enough to spend $200,000 modifying a Toyota, would they?
Maybe it's 200,000 Pesos.
I've had both a 1969 Camaro V8 with nitrous and a 1997 Supra TT... among other cars. I tell you that both were serious vehicles... all this talk about which is better is ridiculous as it all comes down to power:weight ratio... the camaro was heavy and cornered like crap, the supra was light, but lost it in the top end... I mean a freaking turbo'd Lotus Elise can do a 1/4 mile in under 4 seconds and it's only a 1.8L 4 Cyl. And that thing can out corner nearly everything on the road.
An airplane flying past at speed would need to be traveling at 225 mph to cover a quarter mile in 4 seconds.
The guy talking about the elise can do 4 sec in 1/4 mile is full of it. Only "top fuel" dragster can do 4 sec in a 1/4 mile. Go figure. I have a blown 67 camaro can do 7 sec in a 1/4- your 69 camaro must be total stock.
Sorry, but you can't compete the Supra tt (even fully modified) with big v8's in a competition. The supra tt is just no match that's why Americans rejected the Supra- too much lag. You really have to floor it and wait to feel the torque- unlike the V8s it's power command. Supra are considered in the USA "sports car wannabe." No offense. It's not the choice for people with money- just for teens.
Watch out for v8 fanatic- street legal cars that go over 200 mph in a 1/4 mile- yes, street legal.
An interesting series of posts. But it all depends on what you want your car to do. Large displacement engines are great for torque and straight line acceleration, unless you have a mid-engined car, since the V8/V10 typically will make the care node heavy. Even modern Corvettes are not really great track cars. A 4-cylinder Lotus Elises will outperform a Corvette on a twisty track, while the Corvette will easily outperform the Lotus on a straight line. What you want is overall performance. Cost is also an issue. And this is where Supra will do the trick. It will provide you with straight line power, effective braking, excellent handling, trouble-free mechanics and practicality. It's like the Porsche Carrera, just cheaper.
I am buying a new car soon and am actually deciding between either a camaro, firebird, or supra. I want to spend under $15000 so the supra would be non turbo. I'm guessing the insurance for a nonturbo supra is less than the camaro or firebird so I wouldn't mind doing some mods to make it 300-400 hp. I don't care about any competitive drags or race courses, I just want a fun and quick car to get me around that looks good. supras are much more of a head turner than most american sports cars because they are not as common and imports have tended to be more popular lately. I'm only 20 so I haven't had much experience with muscle cars although I have driven quite a few. most of you guys are hard core about the v8's, but I'm not out do smoke every single car that comes along, just something attractive and sporty. does the supra sound so bad in that situation?
There you go, a testimonial by a 20 year old. Again, supra are for teens, not pro. But the bottom end is, you still loose if you race in a competition. You'll just look silly when you race and loose in a competition.
Mr Street Nationals, You seriously need to tell the rest of the world what you are talking about because no one in the entire world knows. If it were so great we would know. You are better of taking your American made 1 million BHP rockets to space because that's the only place they can take advantage of their pointless power. Secondly the reason why they fly planes is because they can't drive around at silly speeds on roads, where you have to have some handling ability! So a 700mph aircraft would get whooped by a 1 litre Nissan Micra on land even if the Aircraft was flying on low level. A complete car is something that has the ability to Turn, Grip and Handle not just go straight.
A good friend of mine happens to have a 6 Supra. After replacing the twin turbo with a stronger single we got 780bhp out of it (he's got a dyno in his garage). Replaced the lifters, intake, exhaust, injectors, etc. and got it almost to 1200.. then with NO2 it hit 1900 (lots of other mods had to be done to get it to hold that power stable.) However add that power, with the handle of a Supra.. comperable to a porsche 911, and you can't find another car that will touch it.
A Supra with 800 bazillion horsepower. And that's with only the addition of a turbo! Yeah.
There exists enough BS in most of the preceding comments to fertilize Antarctica into a tropical paradise. And by the way, if your Supra's 3.0L can make whatever horsepower with this mod or that, then a 6.0L Corvette might make juuuust a little more power with the same mod. But then, the Vette doesn't have an optional turbo-injected BS option.
And it's easy to say your car showed so many HP on a dyno on this anonymous forum. So, let me join the BS-ing and say that my 1900 Ford Festiva, all stock, has infinity horsepower. So there. Plus it has warp drive. And it can fly.
The supra tt is a great car no matter what anyone says. everyone can talk about how great there cars are and how the supra sucks, but it doesn't. it is an overall performer. whatever happened to the style of racing where you go around a corner and turns and actually race. not this bs where you go to the drag strip where you put the huge tires on the back and race down a track straight. so all of the people with the american cars taht go to the drag strip trying to rip on the supra this car was built to be an overall performer not just a straight line performer. plus it looks better then your car.
Toyota supra, s are fast cars, with the right modifications. These cars can out run and preform, corvetts, porche, ferarri, and even your mother. I can understand why teens are attracted to these cars. The car will run forever, it costs less than a V8, chicks dig the car, it is very stylish, and your mother will like it too.
Here in the USA, parents buy their teeager cars. I know I live here. Supra over here became a dream for teens- the import crowd like the fast the furious type kids. But for adults, supra is weak and cannot win on competition. It's not the choice for adult competition due to its weak engine. With lack of torque, the supra gets behind due to its turbo lag- too much lag-- specially on slalom, the big engines just speeds off instantly- but the supra, you have to wait until it accelarates agin. Come here to America and prove your supra at the competition for adults. Slalom or straight- you be dealing with v8, v10 fanatics. Street legal cars that go over 200 mph in 1/4 mile in 6-7 seconds. I guess you don't know what you missing- you guys think that the supra is so powerful, well here in the USA it's for teens and it's too weak for us- slalom or drag- too much turbo lag- specially on slalom. No offense.
I can't really compare Supras to any American muscle cars as I live in Australia, but over here our V8s (which are made with all American parts) just can't compete with turbocharged imports. In theory they make big power at the flywheel, but strap them to a dyno and then compare figures. at a recent dyno day I saw a commodore with a 6.0i Chevy V8, aggressive cams, exhaust system and a supercharger put down 330hp at the wheels. not a bad figure, but when compared to 2.0i Sylvias which can put down more than that, and Supras with half the displacement making more than twice (best one of the day made 736rwhp) on a stock bottom end, there's no comparison. This is before you take into account weight and handling. also, to the V8 posters, how about just talking cars instead of repeatedly insulting other posters. doesn't do much for your credibility.
Hmmm... US Cars - Corners - I'll pass on that...
US Tuning, need more power, let's add a few more litres to the engine - Lame...
