1995 Vauxhall Cavalier CDX V6 2.5 V6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

This is my fourth mk3 Cavalier and my second with the V6 engine. I wanted to replace my 2.0 Cav with a newer model and I saw this one at a dealer with a full Vsh and air-con etc at a reasonable price.

I have had the car for six weeks and have not had to spend a single penny on it other than for petrol. Usually with my cars something breaks in the first week ie exhaust etc.

Have so far driven it from Kent to South Devon and also to Cardiff and back in a day with no hints of any problems. Hope it stays that way.

Excellent car though.

A year on from buying the car, still nothing at all has gone wrong, even with it now on the wrong side of 95,000 miles.

The air con is very effective, and indispensible at this time of year.

The car has also just this week passed its MOT with no recommended comments at all (that's a first for one of my cars).

HOW do you find the MPG on the V6 compared with the 2.0 ecotec???

19th Jan 2002, 06:45

I average 30 mpg out of this one. If you really hammer it with the aircon on it can drop as low as 23, but normally 28-31.

My old 2.0 8v averages 32, and my brothers 2.0 16v ecotec does 33- 34. Not a huge difference really.

I have just bought a V6 CDX Cavalier, and will be dropping the lump in Astra Van. What do you think, will it work?

1995 Vauxhall Cavalier GLSi 2.0 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good performance, cheap mile-eater

Faults:

Nothing as yet, left wing indicator bulb faulty, but it was like that when I got her. On the first day the engine management fault light lit up, but that has not re-occured since.

General Comments:

Lovely car to drive, comfortable and has a nice big leather covered steering wheel. The auto box is very smooth and the sport mode makes overtaking a doddle. The fan blade alloys are pretty.

1995 Vauxhall Cavalier LSi 1.8i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Practical and useful, although not too exciting

Faults:

Loads of minor faults.

Temp sensor worked intermittantly (easily fixed).

Central locking frequently stuck leaving all doors other than drivers open.

Brake switch at the pedal worked its way loose on several occasions (worth checking).

Bonnet cable snapped.

Numerous bulb changes.

Ignition key wore out quite quickly.

Consumption gets bad without regular servicing.

General Comments:

Nothing too serious, but a lot of annoying faults due to build quality. Considering this was the end of the line for the Cavalier, you'd think they would have ironed out most of their manufacturing problems. A good all round car, comfortable with plenty of space. Needs checked regularly.

1995 Vauxhall Cavalier GLSi 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Bonnet cable snapped, leaving me unable to check oil level, but cheap to fix. Slight oil leak from sump plug.

General Comments:

This my second Cav, plush inside makes long motorway miles very easy. Air con would be nice. This has done 120k but still pulls well, oil changes are a must, standard alloy wheels and fog lamps make it stand out from the rest.

1995 Vauxhall Cavalier SRi 16V EcoTec 2.0 16V petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Only had the car a week. Had trouble getting the Grundig stereo to work. Brake pad warning light keeps coming on.

Sounds like a diesel when you start up in the morning.

General Comments:

I am quite disappointed with the performance. Insurance is expensive at group 15.

I really wanted a 16V Calibra but couldn't afford a decent one.

It's a nice colour though and a bit of a head turner.

Try using Wynne's engine flush, then replace the oil with Mobil 1 every 6,000 miles, the low viscocity of this oil means it gets into the valve lifters quicker, and replacing the oil more often means it does not thicken enough for the problem to manifest itself. Apart from this, ALL Vauxhall 16 valvers sound like this when a bit worn. At least it's better than some Ford's I've heard, whose loose tappets sound like a gang of steam hammers going down the road!!

1995 Vauxhall Cavalier GLS 2.0 16V petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Heater Panel lights (several times) and outside Temp gauge, both common faults.

General Comments:

Car bought at 7 months old from NQ, excellent car, and has enough power. I get 31 mpg no matter how I drive it!

1995 Vauxhall Cavalier LSi Auto 1.8 8v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Very little, exceptionally reliable. Just remember to get the cam belt changed every 40-50,000 miles.

General Comments:

Auto 1.8 is better to drive than the manual. It's a very smooth unit and in sport mode gives better 50-70 acceleration than you get in the manual. Ride however lets the car down in a big way, it's very choppy over anything but the best of road surfaces. Interior trim is very high quality and late model LS spec and above have v.good equipment levels (alloy wheels, ABS etc) considering the money you can pick these cars up for.
