1994 Volkswagen Jetta GL 1.8 from North America

Summary:

The car was fun to drive and extremely reliable!

Faults:

Fuel pump.

General Comments:

I bought the car brand new and it is extremely reliable. I performed regular maintenance, and it kept running and running with no mechanical difficulties, except for having to replace the fuel pump at about 200,000 miles. I gave the car to my daughter in 2007 and she is still driving it. The car did not have electric windows, and that may have been why it did not have any electrical problems.

The car is very fun to drive and does well in accidents. I was rear ended by a large US car and it was destroyed, but the Jetta did not have that much damage compared to the other car.

The car is one of the most reliable cars I know and still looks good inside and out. My daughter wanted to change the color of the car and it was painted in 2010. The paint still looked good prior to her painting it.

The car had a manual transmission and was fun to drive, and I liked the great turning radius and the great handling. The car still has a lot of zip, even with the number of miles on it.

1994 Volkswagen Jetta GLS and a GL 2.0L from North America

Summary:

Two of the best cars I've ever owned!

Faults:

On my 1994 Jetta GLS (White) -

Camshaft sensor.

Exhaust.

Dash lights (bulbs).

Someone stole my VW emblem off the front.

On my 1996 GL (Black) -

O2 sensor.

Exhaust.

Same dash lights.

General Comments:

I love both of my Jetta's, and wouldn't trade them for a brand new Mercedes.

Both of them have been AMAZING!

Interior on each car is COMPLETELY different. (Seat belts, sunroof cover, speaker placement in the rear, and interior color)

My 1994 has a glove box, my 1996 doesn't.

1994 Volkswagen Jetta 3 CLX 1.8 from South Africa

Summary:

Despite its problems, I loved it!!

Faults:

Interior door pins and glove box handle have snapped.

Immobiliser stopped working.

Central locking motor had to be replaced 4 times.

Boot lid lock has not worked since I got the car.

Wiper motors.

The car cuts out when stopped or accelerating, and won't start again.

Car shudders and jerks sometimes. Have taken it in to VW, and replaced numerous parts, but the problem is there.

Aircon pipe exploded.

Fuel pump.

Carburettor had to be replaced 6 times.

Pieces of rubber in the fuel line.

Rust.

General Comments:

Powerful and quick for its size.

Has a very solid feel to it, despite problems.

Fuel efficient.

Safe car held up well in 2 accidents.

Fantastic aircon.

Reliability is a big let down to the car.

1994 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 from North America

Summary:

I would never buy another one

Faults:

Many unresolved electrical issues.

Oil light/alarm would come on all of the time. I had both sensors replaced and the problem became less frequent, but never really went away.

Windshield wipers would fail during the rain. This problem was investigated by mechanics, but went unresolved.

Transmission would always grind when shifting into second gear. This issue was investigated by mechanics and never resolved.

Car would stall occasionally when you came to stops, and would have a difficult time starting again.

Timing belt, distributor cap and rotor, plugs and plug wires, brakes all needed replacement. These are all things that are expected to go, but I figured I'd mention them because VW parts are notoriously expensive and the dealership charged $85/per hr to do the work.

General Comments:

This car is very comfortable to drive; however it was completely unreliable and spent more time in the shop that it did on the road.

The 2.0 4cyl engine lacks power for a sedan that size.

The factory wheels are very small in comparison to other cars.

I am totally confused by this review.

So you're saying you bought a 15 year old car with 200,000 miles and you didn't expect to have any problems? Really??
