1999 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 from North America

Summary:

An excellent car, but with uncertain reliability

Faults:

Obviously, I am one of the lucky ones that got a reliable Jetta.

I have been driving it every day with a 30-mile commute. There are only a couple minor things that have gone wrong:

The rear brake pads needed replacing at 55000 miles.

One side of the cup holder broke.

Of course, I have the yellow grease oozing from under the doors.

Every VW dealer I have ever been to is the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel for customer service. It seems that VW trys to have the most awful, rude people working in their dealers.

General Comments:

This car is quiet and has a good ride.

Handles excellent, although could use more power.

Braking is excellent.

Fuel economy is good.

Even though I have had excellent reliability so far, I can't help, but worry occasionally if my time is coming.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS from North America

Summary:

Stay away

Faults:

The front bumper was pulled off on a parking block. It now falls off from time to time.

Grease oozes out of the rocker panels below the doors. I wash it off, and there it is again.

Sunroof shade broke making the sunroof useless.

Front cup holders broke.

Rear cup holders broke as well as the ashtray assembly that the cup holders are in.

Center console storage compartment latch broke off.

Glove box handle broke off. Cannot retrieve anything in glove box.

All door handles and pulls in the interior began to peel.

Engine rattles on start-up and when slowing to an idle.

Several plastic pieces under the front of the car have fallen off. I suspect that this is due to cheap screws and clips.

One headlight is dim. New bulbs do not fix the problem.

Check engine light is on.

Rear seat folds down for access into trunk. There is a lock on the seat to secure items in trunk. Lock is broken so seat cannot be folded down.

General Comments:

Very poor quality. I had expected more from this car.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2 liter from North America

Summary:

Looks and drives great, till the next monthly repair

Faults:

Check engine light.

Cruise control doesn't work.

Needs new brake rotors and pads with 55k on the car.

Burns oil, running 2.5 liters short and check oil light came on, this happened 2 months ago and it doesn't appear to have a leak. I have to take it to the dealer tomorrow to have checked.

Electrical problem, dome light in trunk burned out, but when replaced still doesn't work.

Rear driver side door doesn't always lock when the others do. Alarm doesn't sound if you open the door.

Radio replacement 5 times- cassette deck still doesn't work.

Air flow on dash doesn't light up when headlights are on.

Glove compartment hinge broken on one side.

Leaks water through door trim when it rains or goes through car wash.

Gas tank cover doesn't lock shut, repaired once under warranty, but broken again.

Doesn't respond to the hand held auto lock/unlock when facing the trunk, I must go to the side of the car and point at the side door to engage it. I had this problem when I originally bought the car and the dealer said that is normal.

General Comments:

I thought a new car would be nice so I wouldn't have to worry about repairs. This car had problems from the get go and each year adds to the pile. I am going to have to sell it before I owe the shop more than I paid for the car. IF I had kept my 92 Honda, it would still be running and with less time in the shop than this 7 year "younger" car.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta wolfsburg 2.0 from North America

Summary:

A great reliable car that they need to get all the kinks worked out and fast

Faults:

I have had a lot of the same problems everyone else has had. Right now my jetta is in the shop for a number of things. first of all I have had 2 pretty bad accidents and I have not been injured one bit. The car is extremely safe. on the other hand ever since I have had problem after problem. Right now I am getting over $700 worth of repairs done and that isn't even everything. I am not getting my speedometer fixed that hasn't worked for a year and also am not getting an O2 sensor and Throttle body work done. In addition my rear driver's side window is not working, and last summer I had to replace the motor for the front driver's side window.

I am a huge fan of the new jetta's, but I cannot see myself buying another. Good luck to everyone.
