Ditto. I have had all the same issues. This car sucks!!!

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Faults:

Check engine light came on after 45000miles and dealership said it was caused by Mass air flow sensor replacement cost 600$

Problems with brake lights always going out.

Now check engine light is on again, this time it's a bad throttle body which will cost about 600$ to replace.

If most people I having this problem there most be something wrong with the 1999 Jettas.

General Comments:

Car is very unpredictable especially after 40000 miles, it almost feels like one thing after the other.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Summary:

It is a good car.

Faults:

The battery and alternator needed replacement three days after purchase. It must have been sitting too long in the dealership?

I have been in for service with minor problems. The front headlight glass needed replacement from a build up of exhaust fumes coming from other cars. The vanity light wasn't working, and the trunk light doesn't work for about 90%of the time, but they say it works.

General Comments:

I like the pick up and go of the car.

It handles well in the mountains of Santa Cruz, which are winding and long.

I also like the warranty that comes with the Pre-owned vehicle.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta from North America

Summary:

Wouldn't buy another Volkswagen

Faults:

Glove box has broken 4 times.

Large springs have fallen out of passenger & driver seats.

General Comments:

The car runs well, but because Volkswagen will not stand behind their product, in my case they will not fix or admit the glove box is deffective, I will not purchase another vehicle from them.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0L from North America

Summary:

I will not buy Volkswagen cars in the future

Faults:

Check Engine light came on and to fix that I had to replace the oxygen sensor two times, already.

The turn signal stopped working and had to repair it at the dealer.

The hinge of the gloves compartment door broke.

The car burn about a quart of engine oil every 3000 miles, which is more than I had expected.

The ashtray lid broke and I found out from my acquaintances who own Jetta models 1999-2002 had the same problem.

General Comments:

I enjoy driving this car and the exterior design looks great. I am satisfied with fuel consumption and I have been getting 33 miles per gallon constantly. The ride and handling is very good. The design of the interior and the interior illumination is very attractive. But it seems to have a lot of quality problems.

I have been driving this Volkswagen Jetta 2000 model for 4 years, but the quality of several components are not as good as I had hoped for.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta GL from North America

Summary:

I love the way it drives, but it has a lot of small bugs

Faults:

*Bearing on Right-side front wheel.

*Battery discharge. 3rd battery in 4 years

*driver-side lock broke. Fixed. 2 years later, sometimes it won't lock from automatic lock.

*airbag recall.

*clutch is lot more loose than it should be. (Don't ride the clutch at all)

General Comments:

After reading other comments, I realized that my problems were very similar to others. I, obviously, don't drive that much (only 20k on mileage). But, these minor problems are starting to get annoying. ESPECIALLY, the battery discharge problem. My last battery, which I bought in February is already dead. And, I don't know why. If anyone else has had this problem, please tell me. I have an appointment with the dealership repairs in a couple of weeks and would like to know what to tell them.

Just wondering if you ever found out what the battery drain was caused by. I just had my 4th battery put in my 99 GL. They can't seem to figure out why this keeps happening!? Thanks.

Had my car checked out by the VW people. They tested the battery overnight and said they found no drainage. Of course, I have not had this problem anymore since then (which is around 2 months ago). But, if you find out anything please let me know. I'm sure this isn't the end of this problem.

I also have this car and had two VW batteries go out in a very short amount of time. One even blew up when I went to start it. Of course since this is not a warrantied item I have to pay and pay...

OK, it's happened again. I don't understand. The battery is approximately a year old and starting up the car is not smooth. Haven't had to jump it yet, but it feels close. I know it's the battery cause if I leave the car standing for 30 minutes, it takes no time for it to start, but overnight, it hesitates. I have checked everything in the car, just in case a light was left on--nothing. The driver side lock jams up as well. I had these 2 same exact problems 5 months ago. I brought the car to the dealer, they checked it overnight, and could not find a problem with the battery or the door lock. I paid my $200 in service fees and got nothing accomplished.
