1999 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Best car I ever had

Faults:

Actually only replaced the muffler and cat (bought the car knowing about it), window motors and did the brakes once.

General Comments:

I absolutely loved my Jetta. My husband just rolled it a couple of months ago and walked away without even a scratch. At 140,000 I never wondered if it was going to start. Drove it back and forth to NH from NJ, and to KY. This car was fantastic and I can't wait to replace it with another.

I don't know what people are complaining about. For me, I was glad that my stupid window motors were the problems I dealt with rather than front end problems and transmission issues with my NEWER year Explorer!

1999 Volkswagen Jetta base model from North America

Summary:

It is perfect!

Faults:

My 99 Jetta got stuck in park as well. The only time I could switch gears was when the key was right before the 1st position. (This is when the dash lights are off.) Since you can only start the car in park or neutral, a trick is to place the shift knob right between neutral and drive. it should start up, and then you can push it slghtly back right into drive. Then at least you wont have to tow your car to get it repaired. Obviously doing this repetitively is not a good idea. The part I needed to get this common problem fixed was a break light switch. It only costs me $35.

General Comments:

This car has very good gas mileage.

It rides very smooth.

It has a cute appearance.

It is perfect for first-time drivers.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Avoid VW at all cost because you will pay

Faults:

Replaced all four window operators.

Head gasket.

Caliper holders were seized and rotors.

Vacuum lines collapsed.

Engine light won't go out.

Repaired wires through the drivers door. To short and eventually riped appart causing alarm and windows to go haywire.

General Comments:

The car is junk. I will never by another German car or allow anyone in my family to buy one. I am stuck with it now until my son gets into his job.

Nothing but problems seems like something new every month.

When it runs, it runs well, but not worth the trouble.

There are wiring problems in the 98 Jetta even without the power windows; the wires shorting out in the column, the console and at the radio. Of course these problems are not worth fixing. Beware.
