2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0L from North America

Summary:

An unreliable and expensive piece of crap

Faults:

The wind shield wipers did not stop wiping after I turned it on. The mechanic said it was a bad relay.

The rear power windows did not fully open.

The mass air flow sensor failed. It cost $680 to replace.

Volkswagen parts are expensive.

General Comments:

The car is comfortable, drives well, and looks nice.

I had my Honda Civic for 10 years without taking it to the mechanic. I had my Jetta for 2 years and I've taken it for service 4 times for mechanical problem.

I just got my mass airflow sensor replaced at a VW dealer for $330, so I don't know who ripped you off?

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Reliable driver, but bad interior materials

Faults:

Gas filler flap broke off, blocked gas tank, had to remove/replace whole tank assembly.

Antenna cable and remote sensor replaced.

Glove box hinges broke twice.

Armrest latch and both cup holders broke.

Seat springs broke off seats, both cars.

General Comments:

I have had no performance problems with either my 1999, or my 2000 Jetta.

However, the black cloth interior of the 99 is a nightmare to clean, the fabric of the seats act like a lint brush.

The interior plastics are durable, but easily scratched.

Many of the interior moving parts have broken and keep breaking because of poor design.

I have a 2000 Jetta with 100,000 miles. I have had no engine /mechanical problems ever. However, there have been some small problems/issues with the car. Recently the seat spring fell out from underneath the passenger seat. The dealer wanted to charge me between $500-$600 to repair. They said that they would have to remove the seat & replace a plastic clip. I honestly feel that there should be no charge for this. This is hardly a wear and tear issue and I never move the seat. Needless to say my passenger seat will be one spring short.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 from North America

Summary:

3 more years if it lasts... then it's gone.. don't know if it would make it any longer

Faults:

Doors creak (all of them).

Waxy substance leaks out of all the doors on hot days (dealer: Oh, that's the lube for the latch rods... uhhhh... OK, why does it melt when the temperature is over 85?).

Mass air sensor @ 38000 ($535 - ???).

Dash rattles.

Passenger door-lock does not release on the first try.

Center console latch broke.

Trunk release in the cabin never works or worked.

General Comments:

Nice car, handles pretty well.

Enough torque... when the car is not cutting out because of failed sensors.

Nice options.. but, some don't work.

German car???... Mexican car???

Tight car for the first few months, beyond that stuff starts rattling... everything.

I couldn't agree more. I have a 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, and loved the car for the first several months. I then started to hear some annoying rattles from both front doors (especially in colder weather). I took it to the dealer, and they put some kind of grease on all the door seals. Amazingly, this took care of the problem. However, there is now a rattle in the dash somewhere, the driver's seat makes a "thump" when accelerating and braking, and my armrest latch is broken. By the way, grease leaked out of my doors also (pretty common with most cars in south Texas though). Also, whenever I make a turn (right or left) at any speed greater than 2 mph, it sounds like the frame is squeaking. Not very comforting. Let me know if you got your problems taken care of. Overall, I really like the style and interior quality of the car. I just wish the annoying rattles and creaks would go away!
