2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.8 turbo from North America

Summary:

Mine is good, but you might get a lemon..

Faults:

This car has been very reliable for me, and I am glad because of their somewhat poor reputation. The only thing that I would consider a problem would be that the MAF sensor went out and the diverter valve went shortly after. A fairly cheap repair, done by me. Other than that this car has been totally reliable.

One time it wouldn't start for a couple minutes??? Never happened again...

General Comments:

I continuously beat the crap out of this poor little car and it loves every bit of it. The 1.8T engine has great power and is capable of much more. I can smoke most Jap imports and V8 automatic Mustangs for that matter.

The down sides are some interior squeaks and rattles starting, poor/worse gas mileage in cold weather, noticeable worse drivability in cold weather, but that's just being picky...

2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS wagon 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Take a closer look, very good car

Faults:

Overall I would have to say that the Jetta wagon has been a wonderful car. We only have had the car for about 2 months and during that time it has been one of the best to drive yet. It drives just as fast or faster than the sedan models and performs about the same on the corners and curvy roads.

The only thing that is wrong with the car so far is the child safety lock button on the left side driver's door. it works only when you hold it down, so I need to fix the button.

The only other thing that bugs me about the car is how there is a rattle inside the rear left passanger door. It is a light rattle between 25 and 35 mph. It's not a big deal though.

General Comments:

One of the reasons I bought a Jetta was because my sister has one and it has been a wonderful car. Hers was made in Mexico, and mine was made in Germany. I think the German models are the better ones to tell you the truth. The wagon and the wolfsburg are the only ones that are made in Germany though.

The only things that have gone wrong with my sister's Jetta have been the moon roof shade, two light bulbs, and the drink holder. Very uncommon problems, but they occur on any vehicle. Hey, I just sat in a 1998 Ferrari not to long ago and the red leather was peeling off the dash! I just laughed.

If I had the money, I would have gone for the the Jetta's older brother, the Audi S4 or the Avant wagon, but the Jetta has been great so far.

Actually, you were half-right. The Jetta wagons are made in Wolfsburg, but the Wolfsburg Edition sedans are not. They are made in Puebla, Mexico, as are all Jetta sedans.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your VW!

Notice how all the other Jetta owners have complained after 25,000+ miles (or at least 6 months)... give it a year and post again. I was going to buy a Jetta, but after seeing all the negative feedback, no way. I say after only 2 months you haven't really owned it yet.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 from North America

Summary:

I wish I could get my money back for this car

Faults:

Where do I start? How many problems can a new car have? As it is known the braking percentage for the front to back on the 2001 is wrong. So, the brakes wear way to fast. The CD player works when it feels like it. The tail lights and brake lights go out every couple of months. I'll be driving and all the idiot lights on the dash will come on at the same time. I have or should have power windows, but the driver and the passenger windows do not work. The dealer or dealers I've gone to will not help me at all. I have never had such bad service before in my life with anything. I almost go into shock when the dealer tells me they cannot reproduce the problems, any of them. The other line they love to use is, it's the way you drive the car.

General Comments:

I cannot wait to sell this car or get rid of it in some way. It has been a nightmare since the first time I brought it in to be serviced and got hammered with a bill that was three times my car payment just for the normal service. I've done everything to try and get some help with this car. I have written every letter and called every number. Volkswagon just does not care that they are making a terrible car. Funny commercials, but that's it.
